A fairly straightforward what car? After a couple of years of dithering I have decided to buy a mustang. I live in Dubai so petrol cost not an issue, and I will buy new. Should I go v6 or v8? Manual or auto?not really bothered about outright speed although I did find the test drive in the v8 highly entertaining. So, what car?

Are we talking 1960s original, or brand new GT, or a Rousch tuned bad boy?

If fuel is not an issue, you need the V8. You NEED the V8. I think I'd actually go with the automatic for Dubai, especially if it's going to be for cruising rather than road racing.

Assuming you mean a recent car- buy a GT premium manual with the GT track package. Then supercharge it.

Since fuel isnt an issue, go for the V8. The latest one is powerful, punchy and a cracking good price (for what it is). GT Premium is the package too, though its rather behind on the tech inside though, so expect the engine to be best entertainment.

Not owned either but have done a lot of miles (1000s plus) in rentals of V6 and V8 (and Shelby) variety, in coupe and convertible. Both basically look the part, but driving wise the V6 is a poor imitation of the V8. OK for pounding the miles on freeways etc., but it seems to have had a funectomy; just another soul-less car really. Ignore all the criticism of solid axle/cart springs. Unless the road is particularly poor you'd be hard pressed to tell and they handle well enough.

However, the convertibles I've driven have had THE worst scuttle shake I've ever encountered. If felt there as a hinge in the middle and you could see the top of the windscreen frame visibly moving from side to side over quite mild bumps. Probably OK for cruising and blasting away from the lights, but a fairly unpleasant ride on the open road.

But...if you are looking US metal then the Camaro or Challenger are soooo much better, and the Corvette is just in a different league.

I have driven the first new model in V6 form and the newer V8 GT, the V6 isnt stupidly slow, its just slow for the image it portrays, decent car but the V8 is the real deal, the V8 is pretty fast, god knows what the Shelby ones are like, had a tour round the factory in Vegas, that was an eye opener.

The newer V6 has more power, in fact I think the newer V6 may be on a par than the first new gen V8 GT, or not far off, think the first ones were like 230 nd 330 bhp and the second gen 300 and 410 bhp.

Oh yes, I'd far prefer the Camaro or Challenger over the Mustang... Corvette is in a much higher league though, so not really a comparison.

Any reason why you've settled on the Mustang?

I never heard anyone with a V8 wishing they had a V6.

I've driven 4 of the V6s, got them from AVIS in San Francisco and they were all pretty good. I couldnt help but think that they'd be much improved by a) a manual gearbox and b) a bigger engine with more cylinders

I'd def go V8 if you can

Just a personal thing. I don't like the challenger and the vette is too expensive. The camaro is nice but I prefer the mustang. I love the shape

I think you got the pic by now - but basically any large Yank just HAS to be V-8 powered, the sixes are the "poor man's" option or for those who don't know any better.

Always has been, always will be.

I used to have a V6 Camaro, people used to ask gleefully what engine was in it, expecting some rip-snorting V8 and I had to dissapoint them by explaining it was a poxy 3.1-litre V6.

Part of the attraction of having a Yank car is so when you're asked about the engine you can crack a smile and say "5 litre" or something similar. This works especially well when said person is known to be a bit "eco", for extra points embellish how terrible your MPG is, even if it isn't actually that bad for a big motor.

If you are buying brand new buy the V8, yes the new 3.7 V6 is a good motor (300hp) and is no slouch, its still around 100hp down on the 5.0 V8!

Neither of those cars is as good to drive as the Mustang.

I drove all 3 before settling on the Mustang.

Both look miles better however IMO.
