A unashamed what at thread, not for me but for my father. I have tried lots of suggestions but running out of idea's

He is been running a e46 330i estate for the last few years but it's coming to the end of its useful like.

Criteria is estate car, auto 'box, similarish performance to the BMW so let's say upwards of 180bhp, as close to 30mpg as possible, petrol. Budget is between 4k and 7k.

Mercedes c350's are coming up, any opinions on those?

Cheers, james

E91 touring? Maybe a nice E60 if you can find a nice petrol model. Should for £7k!

A Saab 9-5 is a good bet that would suit him, but he has written that idea off for some reason. Does the legacy come with decent performance without getting the R model?

Don't think an E91 comes in on budget? E60 probably a little big, but will have a look.

Thanks guys.

Volvo do estates very well. The t5 is a good engine choice.

The best E39 530i or 530d he can buy, I'd go for a sport with a high spec.

The issue with the e39 is that it's the same age as an e46 so likely to have similar age related issues as the car he's selling.

The legacy is great but fuel economy I think is closer to 20 than 30 realistically

Not a fan of the Merc James so let's quash that.

Volvo v50/70?
I do like the e91 330. My neighbour bought a 320d estate for 5k. One of the first e91s I think but we'll in budget.
passat r36...? Probably over budget but I reckon they'll hold value well.

I've done a few auto estates. Octavia vrs will be rare in auto form so probably out. Volvo have a dodgy reputation with geartronic boxes.

I had an e61 5 series which was utterly ruinous. Every bill was eye watering, even at the specialist.

2 months ago, for £6200, I bought an 08 plate, 58k mile, FSH accord tourer 2.4 EX. It's fully loaded with heated leather, nav, cruise, climate and all that good stuff.

I fully expect it to be bomb proof and soak up the miles. Over about 7k miles now it's average 32.8 mpg and I'm not light on the loud pedal

The Merc's stats hold up pretty well, they are all auto and plenty within budget

He has tried a V50 and didn't like it.

Octavia Vrs would be a good shout if we could find an auto...

I will suggest an accord, that'd a good idea

R36, fuel economy? Not many around?

E91 330 would be my choice.

R36 would be a good, but they're so rare I doubt you will be able to track one down.

Currently looking at merc c260s I think. Maybe c2xx something else not 100%. Test driven a c200k estate that was falling to peices but liked the car as a whole. Also driven a v50 that he didn't like

Oh, I'm the OPs brother smile
