Im currently 21yo, and when someone finds out about my hobby i always get told how they used to like cars, but then realised there were more important things in life.
Usually im told this by people whose lives i would consider miserable.
And there are just as many people who dont make this comment.

But it made me wonder, for those of you on here that are older, did people used to tell you that you would grow out of it?
It bugs me, because im sure i wont.

Grr

I know the type they mean, those who sit in Tesco car park in their lowered Saxos, those lot will grow out of it, im sure.

Misery loves company. So they tell themselves that your pleasures will soon be gone too. Ignore them.

You probably will. Priorities change as you grow up. I did, as did my friends. There are much more interesting things to obsess over.

This is a topic that I have often pondered over the years. I don't think you necessarily change your tastes I still love all the little sports cars that I did when I was younger. Now that I'm old and fat sitting in big leather seats and having an automatic gear box is just more appealing to live with every day.

I'm 48 and still mad about cars.
My dream garage changes everyday!

Drives my Mrs mad that I keep on wanting to change cars.

You're younger than my son, and I still haven't lost interest in cars, or bikes.

Admittedly the cars & bike I buy are a bit more sensible now, but I still lust after the insane, expensive and fast ones.

I am 43 and still love cars.
My dad is 70 and still loves cars.
I have friends ranging from 20 to 80ish who are still into their cars.
In fact someone I know is out competing on the Roger Albert Clark rally this weekend, he is 75

fk that, I want to be one of those 70+ petrolheads, taking their pre war Bugatti's to goodwood trackdays! Ive always loved cars, always will. You may notice in my future I hope to be rich, or in a world where type 35's are considerably cheaper....

You might look back and realised you were into a different type of car when you were young than at 55, but that just evolving as a car geek.

Plus, people claim to be into cars when all they really mean is they have a passing fancy for Focus STs or M3s or the like, they aren't really truly sad car people like us PHers...

People (especially parents) have been telling me that since I was 4. I think they've realised they were wrong hehe

I don't think you'll 'grow out' of cars but life cycles change.

I'm early 40‘s and have have bikes and cars in the past but that went on hold for a whilst for kids and start up mortgages.

The kids are now 6 and 4, the mortgage is a bit easier and I now have a TVR as finances permit.

Your priorities will change but won't set in stone. It's just life cycles.

This...

I was told the novelty of driving would quickly wear off not long after I passed my test... it still hasn't 5 years on biggrin

If it's got an engine and they'll let me drive it, I will still feel like a 10 year old at Christmas

People grow out of cars when their lives start growing in different areas and they feel an urge to buy family wagons or people carriers, then they get to look enviously at sports cars and hot hatches and try desperately to not feel too bad by telling the sports car driving people how one day they will out grow "fun" biggrin

When those people tell you there are more important things in life than cars, they are, of course, talking sense.
Still nothing wrong with being into cars your whole life though. My dad has loved his since he was your age. He's 70 now and next spring he's changing his RS4 for a Nissan GT-R smile

"You will grow out of it". Exceedingly doubtful! The older I get the cheaper insurance is and the more affordable those older desirable cars become!

I`m 32 and love cars. I like going to Goodwood and car shows as well as doing track days and karting etc.

I don`t think that will ever change.
