There are constant scenarios whereby a cyclist hits the back of your car or scrapes the side of your car.

When you stop check they are ok and then ask them so I've got damage on my car caused by you cycling into my car or catching the side of it they laugh say sorry don't have any money will not give their name and off they go on their merry way.

Even when you call your insurance comp with their details they put it through as a fault claim and do not pursue the cyclist.

Now roles reversed you hit them luckily they are not hurt in any way but their bike is - they will claim against your car insurance rightly.

Does this happen to you often?

I pulled out onto a one way street the other week, in the dark and the wet, only to suddenly find a cyclist flying across my bonnet - he was going the wrong way down the one way street and, even if it had been a two way road, he would have still been on the wrong side.

I got out and told him I had absolutely no sympathy. But he seemed like a nice chap, showed concern about my paintwork (but I was in my 250K miles Audi and it's pretty poor anyway) so I gave him a lift home as his bike seemed to have suffered damage. He was unhurt.

Most regular cyclists do have insurance. All the major cycling clubs and IIRC some of the magasines give third party insurance as part of the subscription fee.

I do not blame the cyclist in theory I blame the last shower of st last in government, they made sure all the blame for whatever happened was the motorists fault.

They neglected to inform that although they are to blame in the eyes of the law you the cyclist / pedestrian will probably be dead.

If they had made know to the wider audience this little titbit then maybe we wouldn't have some many bloody threads about cyclist or peds as they wouldn't be doing it in the ruddy first place.

fking sheep that they are. How bloody hard is it to understand bike + metal will kill you and from the pearly gates you can say what the fk you want but you are still dead because it is all the motorists fault.

If they used a bit of brain power then no they would not need insurance but they are invincible and immortal and besides it is the motorists fault and they have insurance anyway.

As much as I don't like city cyclists I don't think they should. (I dislike insurance companies even more wink) they just need to change the rules as previously said so the cyclist can be at fault and not just the motorist.

I would prefer all road users to have equal responsibilities towards fellow road users, however that would need to include pedestrians which would be extremely difficult to implement in practise, and frankly a bit silly.

Pedestrians have been brain washed to think like cyclists so again it isn't their fault, look around the ones that are not as thick as fk still stop / look / listen then look again rather than just walk out like sheep.

Once you brainwash people to believe that it is all one party's fault then YOU create the problem.

Education is the answer to the problem not blaming one side only, fk me I grew up with he green cross code and cycling proficiency test.

You don't see me trying to commit suicide with a 1.5 tonne vehicle. I know what the fk it will do to me rather than thinking oh it is their fault.

How fecking hard is it to grasp?

But you can have a situation where the chap on a bike T bones your car rear quarter a huge debt and scratch. Now unless said chap on bike has thousands of pounds to pay for the damage how does it get resolved? The chap may well accept he is responsible at the accident but then when the costs come in he has no way of affording to pay for them.

Or put it another way a chap on a bike crashes into a pedestrian and let's say the poor pedestrian is paralysed loss of earnings needing care at home for the rest of their lives there is a bill to pay.

As a driver and very keen cyclist, I missed this. Can you provide a link? Thanks.

Household insurance covers the family against 3rd party claims whilst cycling (or anything else).

If that's the case I'm happy (provided they have house ins its not a legal requirement)

Yeh... It's definitely a tricky one. I just don't think we should go down the route that everyone needs insurance to do anything these days.

Nice rant but far more motorists are killed on our roads than cyclists. About 20 times more. The "fking sheep" (???) are rarely involved in fatal accidents, despite being the most vulnerable group out there. Maybe it's we drivers that need to "use a bit of brain power" and stop killing each other.
