The gearbox in my snotter is on its last legs... main bearings are noisy as hell and selecting 2nd whilst moving is now nearly impossible. Double de-clutching helps a little but put simply it's fked.

I need the car for one last trip picking Dad up from Hospital next week (can't use the Land Rover... too bouncy for a post op transport) then I can lay it up until my replacement (£12) gearbox arrives from eBay.

Wanting to make it home, smoothly and quick[ish[ly what will put the least strain/load on the mechanicals?

A) accelerating hard in 1st bypassing 2nd and going directly to 3rd
or
B) selecting 2nd whilst stationary and slipping the clutch to get away

Shirley you don't need to accelerate hard in first? Just take it up to 3500rpm or so smoothly then ease into 3rd?

Btw hope the old man gets well soon & most importantly well done on securing a gearbox for that price thumbup

If it's got a bit of power, do the former.
You don't need to accelerate 'hard' Iin first, you just need to hold the gear longer than usual.
The latter has less mechanical sympathy on your car, but if you're putting a clutch in it when you change the box, it doesn't really matter.
In your shoes, I'd do the former.

I'd forgo 2nd altogether, hanging on to 1st and then rev matching 3rd by double declutching or just easing it into gear slowly as the revs drop to near idle.

Skipping gears is no big deal, I do it every time I feel lazy... 1-3-5, 3 speed, see? Just a tad more revs, but nothing to do with acceleration.

Even using a clutch is optional if you must. Just had slave cylinder failure at the start of a 10 mile zero-alternative run and I made it. You want to avoid stopping at all costs, however!

Just miss out third entirely. Don't push first gear hard as it might be iffy too, just accelerate gently through it to the lowest speed you can get into third sensibly.

I meant to say 'longer' not hard boxedin

Ok I'll skip 2nd entirely then thumbup

996TT02, I have driven the Land Rover when the slave popped a seal and spat the contents of the reservoir all over a Texaco garage forecourt. Managed the last 3 miles home easily enough biggrin
