After a couple of years of company car driving I'm moving jobs and losing the pleasure (??) of the "free" car

I have a low mileage GTV V6 that is staying and OH has a Boxster S so the impractical / fun / convertible aspects are reasonably well covered

I won't be doing many business miles and those that are done will be paid at IR rates

Looking for a family barge that I can throw OH, six year old and spaniel in and get to where we need to go in a degree of safety and comfort

Don't want diesel and don't do French cars and don't really want to spend more than £1500, seems to me the best out there are Volvo V70s and Saab 9-5s

Pretty much decided on a decent spec, mileage and condition 9-5 Aero (already unearthed a few that tick the boxes) but just wondering whether anyone has any ideas that might be worth considering

We got a Mazda 6 estate for about that two years ago. It's now ten years old and has passed the last two MOTs without work apart from a slightly sticky rear caliper. It goes pretty well, handles nicely, has a peppy 2l petrol engine with a cam chain and is pretty big inside.

I looked at anything local under £2k, but if I had to look again I'd actively hunt one down.

Volvo estate. Its one of those cars that regardless of age and tattyness, it could be driven by anyone, a millionaire or a pauper. Built like tanks too. No brainer at the budget.

I used a b5.5 passat estate 1.9tdi 130 for exactly the purpose you describe.

Get a highline spec for leather, parking and the better stereo. Sold ours at 161k miles and still going strong. Good workhorse, just required basic home servicing, diesel at 48 mpg, passed every Mot with flying colours. Cheap tyres on the 15s as well.

Only watch out is getting it cleaned at the Eastern European hand car wash places.. They seem to love them and every time I went in I very nearly accepted an offer to sell before getting out!
