Hello, so I'm soon buying a 1.8 NB (mk2.5) Mx-5 and I'd like to know what I should look for in terms of mechanical faults in a car with more or less 60k miles.

Also, how can I tell a 1.8 from a 1.6 (the LSD is one thing I know...).

1.8 doesn't mean LSD. That's only on the 1.8iS.

To determiine a 1.6 the VIN will be JMZNB186##########

A 1.8 wil be JMZNB18P##########

If you google you'll find plenty of photos and descriptions of where to look. Mainly sills, wheel arches, chassis rails.

The mechanicals will probably be fine, MX-5s are tough as old boots.

Rust underneath is your concern with these cars, get underneath and poke about with a screwdriver if you can!

I'm buying my car in Portugal, so rust is not an issue, and all NB 1.8 were fitted with the torsen LSD.

ON UK models only the 1.8S had the LSD. At least in 2003.
