I love cars. But I have never really spent what I consider to be a lot of money on one. I've had a succession of sheds or sensible cars, each of which has charmed me in some way, but none have left me counting the cost - I have always been a bit careful.

That is about to change. I have ordered a car which will lose more in absolute terms over 5 years than I have lost over the last 15 years or so, but I am doing it anyway.

I'll give £1 to the person who can suggest the most effective way of justifying it to myself.

Yes, £1!

Justify it by the warm fuzzy feeling you'll get knowing people like me can buy it from you in a few years time and not have to suffer much depreciation because you've paid for most of it already. smile

You can't spend your money in the afterlife - so if it doesn't cause you any hardship to spend, enjoy what it buys now.

You haven't lost any money until you come to sell it.

Pft.

I wouldn't have thought the depreciation on a Mustang would be that bad, given the rarity in this country?

You alone know how hard you work to earn the money to enjoy such pleasures

As others have alluded to

- its nigh on impossible to get planning nowadays for a pyramid
- there are no pockets in a shround
- there are no ATMs on the other side

etc.

Enjoy!

Look at it this way, many people out there are losing even more money on four-pot diesel BMWs.

This has been my main train of thought. I also like the 'no ATMs on the other side argument above'.

I also console myself with the expression on my sons face when I started it up at the dealers yesterday about 2 minutes before stting out a deposit. Priceless.

410 BHP, makes a nice noise (rip the sound tube thing out so you get it all the time) and enjoy, Mustangs dont seem to do to badly to be honest, try finding a decent old model GT for less than 15 grand, they plummeted around 2008 and then I think people thought "Hang on" and they seem to have had fairly strong residuals ever since, supply and demand, not many about and a following, my missus wants one and gets all arsey when I send her a photo when I have rented them.

tt.

Every time you get in it you'll smile like a lorry driver at a hookers convention.
At some point you'll realise it's a bit quiet and you'll modify the exhaust ( we all do that)
Then you're realise it could be quicker and handle a bit better and you'll spend some more. (We all do that)

It may not be the fastest or best handling, but you will have more fun in it than any car you will probably ever own.

God I miss my one

Equation is easy

£ / smiles = how much value you get.
You're clearly in the lead.

Depreciation is for accountants and those that find spreadsheets interesting.

You've got a barnstormer of a car and if you sell it tomorrow and lose loads, who cares?

There is more to life than worrying about money.

My dad has NEVER owned a second hand car. NEVER. How he justifies it ? He keeps them 10 years, services them at a main dealer, and trades them in when they are well and truly fked. I guess he thinks, "Well that's only £200 a month over 10 years, cheaper than renting"
