Recently purchased my self a lovely 1991 525i sport saloon

Few little problems. Engine has the slightest of misfires (very hard to notice)

Put the car on my Delphi diagnostics and its telling me bank 1 has a problem. I have removed the coils & they are a quarter way up the spark plugs full of oil however the oil has not touched the metal part inside the coil. So would it be the oil surrounding the plug causing the misfire maybe?

I'd check all the air pipes first.

Little vac pip at the front left of the engine (if your stood at the front of the car) could have a small split. My Dad has a 323i E46 and suffered intermittent misfire and it turned out to be that.

This can only be the rocker cover gasket.

I had a clogged injector on my e34.
Also had crud in the fuel lines and leaking injector seals.

Not necessarily related to your problem, but it might be worth looking into the state of the enjectors at the same time just to be sure for the future.

could just be worn plugs or HT leads - when were they last changed?

If it's the same as my old one it won't have HT leads. The engine has one coil pack per spark plug and the feed wires are all low tension.

Hustle Russell was most likely to be correct. The rocker cover gasket goes on these engines and produces the symptoms you have described. It happened to me and left the spark plug tops oily. It's an easy thing to replace - less than an hour's work and I did it myself with a couple of sockets.

Same on my M50 engined E34, saw a little oil around the plugs at the last service. I'm re-assured to see they're only $36 dollars according to RealOEM, so I'll be fitting new genuine 'profile gaskets' when I next have the coils out.
