Been on a bit of a mission the past week trying to decide on the ideal front engined rear wheel drive car (currently have a track focused Honda S1 Elise) as the FR layout just suits my driving style more.

Budget of around £20-22k and power to weight around 275-300/tonne minimum.

The short list so far:
M3 CSL - too much of a saloon coming from an Elise?
E92 M3 (track focused) - ditto the above, but more so?
Ginetta G40R - possible within the budget?

Any others (excluding Caterhams)? Does the perfect front engined alternative to an Exige/Elise exist?

Cheers chaps/chapettes.

Will no doubt scratch that itch at some point in the future.

Had a mk1 for a few years. Good cars but a change was MUCH needed.

GT86 + Litchfield Supercharger kit?
Dare built Ginetta (might be to "retro" and pretty rare used)?

Really difficult, if you exclude Caterhams, nothing out there that does this out of the box IMO. Assuming you want it fairly light weight and new. Cheapest way probably to make a track toy, starting with something like a transaxle Porsche or a 3 Series.

Really hope the new Alfa Spider / MX5 will be a bit lighter than the NC.

Up the budget a little and get the CSL. You won't regret it

This or a Tamora with spare change for upgrades/making it perfect, its the same car underneath but cost a little less.

A CSL or E92 M3 is going to seem like a barge compared to an exige. I'd have to be looking at a caterfield if it's for track based action. If it's more of a daily with occasional track work then CSL, Z4M, E46 M3 with some tuning, mk3 mx5 (and up) with tuning, stuff like that.

Something similar to a track spec AE86 would be perfect in terms of character - feel the GT86 doesn't look special enough though, same with the former.

Thinking a Ginetta G40R would have a similar character to the AE86.

Are these fetching or likely to be fetching the £20-22k mark within the next year?

I emailed TVR Power about the 12 month engine warranty they were offering in 2010. Do they still offer this?

I went from an Exige to a CSL, it did feel huge & luxurious compared to the lotus but I much preferred it to drive though that was mainly down to the steering-I just never got in with the lotus in that respect.

If it didn't have the stupid gearbox I might even still have it.

Oh & running costs are a lot more if you're tracking it!

No idea, but I used to work for STR8SIX and can say you'd struggle to break one of their engines without serious neglect - i'm sure TVR Power would be a similar story. The specialists have got the Speed6 sussed now.

What about a Caterham 21? I know you said "excluding Caterhams", but it read like you actually meant "excluding Lotus Seven type cars".

Fisher Fury?

That's shows how different people's tastes are... the steering is generally the most loved part of the Elise/Exige package and one of the most criticised bits of the CSL. smile

I suspect some Lotus Seven type kit car would be a winner but I will mention the Zolfe Orange car. Haven't heard much from them lately though.

Op are you wanting something very different to the Elise as I'd have thought an M anything 3 Series is just a million miles from an Elise of any flavour?

Kambites said about the Caterham 21. I'd have thought this would be a good option (if you can find one), assuming you are wanting to stick track focused and lightweight.

Some other left field options.
