The BBC reports that a female cyclist in her mid-20s has died after being hit by a lorry at London's Bow roundabout this morning.
The as-yet-unnamed woman was pronounced dead at the scene after being attended by London Ambulance Service. The crash happened at about 08:47 GMT.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: "It is believed the lorry was travelling west along the A11, entering the roundabout to turn south towards the Blackwall Tunnel.
"The cyclist is believed to have been travelling in the same direction when the collision occurred.
"The male driver of the lorry stopped at the scene. There have been no arrests."
Ross Lydal of the Evening Standard reports that the woman was not actually on Cycle Superhighway 2 at the time. The notoriously dangerous route has recently been extended east of Bow Roundabout with a largely-segregated lane to Stratford.
Cyclist Robin Stephenson told the Standard about the aftermath of the crash which he saw as he rode over the Bow flyover on his way to work as an IT manager: “The traffic was backing up from Stratford High Street. I went over the flyover and saw a huge number of emergency services down there.
“I commute that way every weekday but don’t use the roundabout - I won’t use it. I go over the flyover rather than round the roundabout. The whole area is just dreadful. The only way that they will fix it is to have full segregation for cyclists.”
The London Cycling Campaign has announced a protest ride this evening at Bow roundabout, meeting at 6pm for 6.30.

1,300 people die every day in the UK.

Why are we hearing about individuals, especially if they're on a bicycle?

Why only 1300?
With 60 million people in the uk living to an average age of 80 thats 2000 people die each day due to old age
The rest die prematurely

Another cyclist thinking they're invincible..

They shouldn't just be insured, they should be licensed IMO. Some, (some aren't - it's pretty much 50/50 from what I see) are an absolute joke.

Unless you have details that neither of those news stories are publishing there is no possible basis for that statement.

should work for the police if you can asses an accident scene so quickly with so little information...

Still a rare albeit tragic event surely given the volume of people cycling in London etc.

A lot of ladies are dying on londons roads on bikes, perhaps some if it is down to how assertive they are relative to their male counterparts ?

I am thinking that if a truck driver is moaning about a cyclist blocking his way by being assertive, "taking the lane" and gobbing off at anything they dont like it may keep you alive better than defering to anything bigger.

That gives a life expectancy of about 120 years smile

Idiot.

Unless you have access to information that nobody else does that is a stupid statement to make.

Someone's daughter, sister, maybe mother but just 'a fking cyclist' to some of you. Shameful.

RIP

Careful people
The truck driver wasnt arrested so thats a quick judgement about who made a mistake
It's not only the cyclists family who will be going through it, the truck driver too.
Think about prevention

Blimey that is a shocking number of cyclists in a short period of time!

One thing I couldn't help but notice is that the cyclists that have recently been killed in the capital were struck by LARGE vehicles.

Perhaps it is the case then that these cyclists were lacking common sense and that the wider population have a better ability to decide that trying to undertake/overtake/ pass between multiple large vehicles whilst on a bike is a stupid idea.

We lived in Canary Wharf for a year and only used our bikes once in Surrey.
A colleague who cycled in daily seemed to get knocked off very regularly despite being a very good competitive road biker.

You have absolutely no idea the circumstances surrounding this accident. Perhaps put yourself in the shoes of the cyclist and truck driver's friends and family who will no doubt be scouring the internet for news and commentary and might be upset at happening across a forum full of uninformed keyboard warriors haphazardly levelling the shotgun of blame at anything that moves.

Exactly that. The ignorance of some people is staggering.

Just like licencing and insurance has successfully prevented motorists from thinking they're invincible and dying on the roads?
