Hi Everyone,

Recently i have got chatting to a few people out and about and get questioned by my car, a 2.2 alfa romeo spider, and they expect it to be rather fast, when it actually isnt. They seem shocked that it takes me around 8 and a bit seconds to get to 60, they expect it to be quite a lot faster.

So it got me thinking, i know there is a lot of 'sleeper' cars that look like an everyday hack and are monsters, but are there and sheeps in wolfs clothing? any cars that look sporty and fast, when in actuality, theyre not..?

Hyundai coupe - 1.6 especially but even the 2.7 V6 is comically slow for its displacement, sound and thirst!

Toyota MR2 - most recent MK3?

Toyota Celica - didn't they do a c. 140 bhp version?

BMW 114i M-sport (or almost any M-sport for that matter!) - same can be said for AMG kitted Merc's - E220cdi coupe is a heavy bus!

The obvious contenders.

Audi A4 2.0Tdi SLine / Black Edition

Audi A5 2.0Tdi SLine / Black Edition

Audi A6 2.0Tdi SLine / Black Edition

Not that you'd believe it, the way they all seem attracted to lane 3 of the motorway, belching out st loads of black smoke environmental friendliness whenever they put their foot down.

I think RX-8 falls into that category. Its not slow, but its slower than it should have been and certainly slower than it looks.

Ford Focus RS.

Covered in tacky wings/spoilers with HUGE exhausts yet over 14s to 100.

Bottom end (and indeed higher end if you're just talking about straight-line speed) Elises seem to fall into this category.

My car takes 14 seconds to get to 100, but I'd guess most non-car people would expect it to be quite fast.

What's fast? To play devils advocate,

Some owners have got 60 in high 6s, (read 6.9...) Evo clocked one a 7.2, which is as fast as a Abarth 500 EssesEsse, or mini cooper S ( both clocked by Evo) both are often seen as fast.

But then when it comes to 0-100mph, the small coupes really come off bad, Elise's and the like with 118bhp take an age despite their impressive 0-60.

Id say the GT86, should be clio cup quick (same weight and power) but those tyres let it down, although some proper tyres is an easy fix!

Hmm, like the Alfa in the original post, I don't actually think they look particularly fast. The bonnet-line and front axle position look so obviously transverse-FWD that they both scream "shopping car with a pretty body" to me.

I know this is the thing to do. But these are almost as quick as a Focus ST, just over a decade earlier. What other FWD coupes of this age/market segment are actually significantly quicker?

20c Fiat Turbo is about the only one I can think of. The FTO is as quick or quicker than an Alfa GTV V6, BMW 328i and faster than a 2.0 GT MR2.

Several of these I think have ended up being slower than their owners thought they were. Shan't say how I know this though. wink

Yeah the FTO, it looks a lot faster than it is, although it's not exactly slow for it's era, it is the same stats as the Subaru/Toyota thingy that seems to have become a darling of the masses almost 20 years later!

The Corrado VR6 and Prelude 2.2 were both significantly quicker.
