My step mother has complained to me that her car is nearly double the tax of my father's car. Can anyone advise if this is the case, both cars as below with relevant tax price for year;

2004 Bentley Azure £260 per years
2006 Saab 2.0T Conv £475.00 per year

Now surely the Bentley being a very old design of engine would be far higher CO2 emissions and thus more expensive to tax than the Saab. Or am I missing something?

The top brackets changed in 2006 so £280 is the top for them but after 23 March 2006 the bands L and M where added with the much higher prices.

Would need the exact engine and spec to get accurate figures.

Assuming the Bentley has the 6.7L V8 it shows as VED bracket M on Parkers, which is £269 for 6 months (£490 per year). The Saab shows a mix of brackets depending on spec, the 2.0L Aero turbo with an auto box does come out at £475 per year if a late 2006 model.

It's all based on emissions for cars built after 2001 although I think there was a revision to the brackets around 2006 (hence different bands for the same car depending on date of manufacture)

Change in the tax brackets at the end of march 06 brought in the really high bands (at the time it was called band g, this has since been revised but the gist is the same). Thankfully they never retrospectively applied the newer rules, so no matter how high your co2 before the end of march 06 you pay what was the highest band at the time. This is why my 4.2 v8 on an 04 plate costs the same road tax as my 2.0l on an 07 plate.

This also means that you can buy the same car registered days apart and one will cost several hundred pound less to tax.

The Saab is a 2.0t so not an Aero, but is an auto, but still I get that down as band K. The Bentley is clearly a band L at the very least, so what's going on, have DVLA cocked up and got the cars mixed up?

As already said, all pre april 2006 cars over 205g/km are taxed at the same rate, regardless of emissions.

If the registered date is after the 23rd March 2006 then it jumps into the higher band from what I can see

No it's not. It's pre-2006.
Swap the Saab for a pre-2006 version and that would be identical to the Bentley.

Umm, yes, it does. Last time I looked 2004 was before March 2006.

The reason for the Bentley being cheaper has been explained 4 or 5 times already. You haven't been lost in the system, it's how the system is and always has been since March 06.

OK for the SAAB but surely the Bentley should be a K at £280 and not a J at £260? https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax-rate-tables

Phil, for God's sake, read others' replies on here. It's been explained several times. The bands for car tax changed in 2006. That's why the 2004 Bentley is cheaper than the 2006 Saab.

Which is why a mate bought a 2006 '55' plate Cayenne instead of an '06' or '56' plate.

But for gods sake, make sure your parents dont sell the car because the tax is too high!
Its a minor running cost in the grand scheme of things.
