I drove one of these down to the South of France and back fairly recently and have to say I'm bloody impressed. They seem to be particularly rare but still fairly cheap given the spec. There's a gem in the classfields.

Does anyone own one? Thoughts from someone who lives with one?

A friend has one, nice all round car if you can stomach the MPG. I think he sees late 20s, but that's on a long motorway commute.

For that kind of level of performance, I didn't think 25mpg was bad!

I'd just stick with your 106 if I was you, much more 'you'.

Top class knobbery right there. Can we not have a discussion about cars without resorting to ridiculous cliquey behaviour?

I've got one. Mine (manual gearbox) has averaged 30.3mpg across the 25k miles I've had it, 50/50 town and long motorway journeys.

For the power and flexibility, they are surprisingly frugal. Not many 300bhp petrol cars out there that can manage 32-34mpg on a run.

I love mine.

I had a de-badged touring version when they first came out

I particularly enjoyed the look on the Maserati 3200 driver's face as I left him behind on an uphill section of the M4

Given that I know the OP, that isn't the way it's intended at all.

I'd also be interested. Have spoke to quite a few so far who've not spent much on them other than tyres and brakes. Have been digging around and this for example seems pretty nice for the cash:

Search turbo issues and high pressure fuel pump - the engine is ok on the 335i, but the bits around it have given a very poor reliability BMW.

I had one for a bit. It does 35mpg on the Motorway despite 306bhp which is great. The engine is stunning, an absolute work of art. Sounds brilliant and has fantastic midrange performance. Interior is as per other 3 Series, so cheap plastics and plenty of road noise.

Not super reliable but BMW warranty is very cheap at circa 40 quid a month so not a big deal.

They seem to be bizarrely expensive still, I sold my '58 plate one for 20k about 2 years ago and they are hardly much cheaper now.

Very cheap? £480 a year? £1440 for an average 3 years' ownership? If someone is buying what is supposed to be a quality used car thinking that is a good insurance premium against bork then that tells me the car is expensively unreliable.

I thought about a 335i but went for an N52 330i instead after reading enough about high-pressure pumps lunching themselves and turbo issues.

Yup, not bad eh? Especially as thats for the Comprehensive cover meaning its pretty much as good as new car warranty, but without the new car depreciation.

It's not so much the cost of the warranty but the time you'll potentially waste having it fixed. If a car isn't able to be driven it's a liability.

Lots of misinformation on this thread.

The HPFP is primarily a US issue. Very few (mostly 07 cars) have been affected in the UK.

Turbo issues again are not rife - provided the car has been looked after (no ragging when cold etc) the turbos will do the distance. Further, it's not £4k to replace them if they did go, it's closer to £1500 from a specialist.

Apart from the water pump dying, mine has been very, very reliable. The 335i suffers from a bad rep on the internet because of morons who have no experience with the car assume that a few bad reports online = every car is a ticking time bomb.

Show me a twin turbo 300bhp car that can do 35mpg, 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and has not a single reported reliability issue.

I had one and loved it. Didnt cost me anything other than tyres and services whilst I had it (probably two years).

Nice and quick, a pleasant place to be and also quite practical due to the seats folding down. I PX'ed my 56 plate with 30000 miles for next to nothing. Someone got a bargain.
