SLS AMG Final Edition confirmed

Mercedes bids farewell to its supercar with a bells'n'whistles run-out special

Though hearing of another Mercedes SLS AMG is always good news, to write about its last iteration is actually rather sad. Despite having only been on sale since 2010, AMG's supercar has left an indelibly positive impression on all who have experienced it. That five different SLS models, plus the GT3 racer, have been made in that time, has probably ensured interest has never waned too much.

The SLS AMG GT Final Edition, a 'particularly attractive variant of our super sports car' according to Mercedes, will be unveiled with the S65 AMG at Tokyo and LA next week. As its name implies, the Final Edition is mechanically identical to the SLS GT, making 591hp from that wonderful 6.2-litre M159 V8.

Merc says the Final Edition is distinguished from the standard GT through an 'exciting combination of truly exceptional design and equipment features'. We're not so sure. The new wheels are reminiscent of those seen on the C63 507 and look quite natty on the coupe, but rather too 'tuner' on the roadster. The same can probably be said for the carbon bonnet, which just looks rather incongruous on the open car. The interior will most likely have a few alterations too, but there haven't been any pics of that yet.

There will be 350 Final Editions, but the split between coupe and Roadster hasn't yet been confirmed. Expect to pay for the privilege of nabbing the last SLS models. For reference, the standard GT coupe is £165,030 and the Roadster £176,985. Or, if you're willing to accept a car with a couple of thousand miles, rather a lot less... Full details to follow from the shows next week!

And whilst we're discussing the SLS, here's what a Black Series can do on the Nordschleife. The time? 7:25.67, faster than a 458 Italia...

The short production life with no facelift makes this car more attractive as a classic. It's like the Ferrari 599; never facelifted - some special versions introduced along the way, but no before-and-after facelift. This makes the car seem more special once they have been out of production for a few years.

Being replaced by a smaller cheaper car (although using same basic architecture apparently). Love the SLS but the new car looks interesting too.

Masonry and similar "tuners" will be disappointed - Mercedes has done their tat for them.

Much respect to the gentleman that extracted a sub 7:30 round the ring.

I have to agree with this.

This final edition is pretty tacky looking. A shame really as the standard SLS looks (and sounds) absolutely gorgeous!

Considering the race GT3 SLS does it in the mid to low 6s, then a sub 7:30 is to be expected... Absolutely stunning cars...

Presumably because it's pig ugly with stupid doors.

The roadster looks better but by golly it's expensive compared with an AMG SL.

I love the SLS.

I aspire to owning one as well as the McLaren MP4.

The roadster version isn't blingier when you have gullwing doors.

+1. They ruined the bonnet, which was one of the very interesting parts of the car design-wise. And those wheels look like something a tuned hot-hatch would have...

What a shame for such a graceful car to go away like this.
