I am looking at buying a budget roof down, bit of fun for next summer.
It will NOT be my daily,or only vehicle, although it will be obviously used if we have a good summer.
My choices of vehicle are the title above.
Maximum budget is two grand. This is rigid, give or take a hundred quid.
Going to be early versions of both cars obviously.
I'm not a small lad,so the Mazda especially I'm worried, will make us both look like Noddy in his car.
Not worried about the hair dresser association with the merc.
Thoughts, and alternatives on this dilema please.

The SLK seems to be universally shunned by petrolheads, the AMG version seems to be allowable.

Think its the auto box, the metal hard top and general aura of wealthy suburban older lady, the Kompressor engine is somewhat effective but sounds like a cement mixer full of hammers.

MX5
You knew the answer you'd receive on here I'm sure!
Edit to add: My boss is 6'3, 19 stone and fits in one just fine.

Yep, definitely not an enthusiasts choice. Z3 from that era would probably be better although they aren't that great either.

Thanks for replies, MX5 was my first choice, more choice it seems to whizz it up a bit, although the hard top on the slk looked a bit more secure.
Made my choice of roadster, when they did both cars on wheeler dealer.
Being 6' and 17st, when standing by the side of MX5 it looks very low, and very small, even compared to the Merc.

I dont quite get the hatred for the mk1 SLK myself.

My wife had a 320, so 6 cyl, which I think probably helped. It was also unusually a manual.

I'd take a 320 over an early mx5 any day.

Just to add, give your budget, 320 not going to happen.

Do you like Red? Is this not the most inappropriate location to photo a car?!

Perhaps that's a statement to the perceived ownership age range hehe

My mum has a facelift mk1 SLK and I'm surprised how good it is as a drivers car. It gets slated a lot in the motoring world, but I don't think they are that bad at all.

Certainly if you want a bit of grunt take one over the MX-5.

well we have both... guess which one we use most, and the one we took to France and Switzerland this year... The MX5 is such a fun car!

A new SLK55, whilst not an option here, is a beautiful and very very fast place to sit. I like yours.
