Hi All,

My boy is 17 soon. He's looking at a Polo or something similar.

Any advice you can give on best car per insurance pound and best insurers to go to would be very much appreciated.

thanks in advance

In the same boat - would be nice for real examples and not random responses suggesting 40 year old Porsches on classic insurance for £20 a year should be achievable...

Tried quoting on a couple for my nipper - can safely rule out Ford Pumas which were coming back in the 3-4k bracket.

Something other 17 year olds don't tend to drive, and therefore isn't regularly crashed by 17 year olds, meaning the insurance is cheaper.

I'm sure someone on here had a great deal on a Volvo 850.

As above really, old micra or fiesta.

Skoda Fabia - low insurance, boy racers don't drive them. Was my first car and once over the "skoda" it was a lovely first car, was a W reg and that was 5 years ago now.

Check out the Mk1 Ford Focus, either the 1.4 or the 1.6

If you want to be left-field and cheap, try some unwanted, unfashionable cars like Rover 75, Nissan Primera, Citroen C5 etc. They are usually much cheaper to insure than the usual crop of Corsa, Polo, Saxo etc.

All you need to do then is persuade your offspring that this is a really, really good idea!

For really cheap insurance, when I was looking, Ford Kas came up cheap, but so did Fiat Seicentos. If you don't treasure your son's knees all that much, they're a hoot to drive.

Try things out of the norm, I.E a MK1 deisel Focus is cheap to insure. anything considered a family car is good aswell.

Go on multiple comparison websites as insurers change their target market often. and dont be afraid to call them up and ask for a discount.

Add on named drivers with lots of experience, and are older.

Hi all the comparison sites don't accept anyone under 17. Do you just pretend to be 17 today and get a price?
What about multicar? With him as first driver on one?

Micra, fabia or Ka would be my thougts. Although the C1 looks pretty cheap to insure.

Put you and the Mrs on the policy as named drivers, for when you occasionally use the car.

1.0l Arosas/Lupos I think are one of the cheapest (older) cars to insure,

Admiral/Elephant are usually the cheapest insurance for younger drivers, try their websites directly as they usually give cheaper quotes there than they do on comparison sites

Or tell him to wait a year or 2?

(not much use if he lives in the sticks of course)
