Ive seen in the last year or so insurance company's asking is you want one fitted to your vehicle.

Last year I was in a meeting with a sales guy with a company that sells this type of thing. Although for us it was used slightly differently I believe the same sort of thing was used by insurance company's

Im interested to hear if any of you guys has had one fitted and how have you found it ?

I had one on my fiat seicento i just got rid of for an mx5! hardly knew it was there, every four weeks they 'grade' you on your driving. Your premium then goes up or down depending on how much of a good you have been! Also if you score 'black' 2 times that's it. So it is a risk but I ragged my poor little fiat and all i got was a red/amber mix so they are fairly lenient! Overall experience was trouble free and didn't impact selling either.

forgot to mention that they grade you on.... speed... braking... cornering and acceleration.

Meaning it's better to run the little st over and make a steady escape the to emergency stop.

Which would probably happen if you're staring at your speedo 100% of the time anyway!

Scoff all you want but anything that helps younger people get their premiums down, and enforces some rudimentary level of "invisible supervision" isn't really a bad thing is it?

Yes it won't penalise people doing the NSL legally in the snow, or driving without any lights on, or avoiding hazards or any number of contrived scenarios that one might think of, but nothing short of actual Big Brother watching everything we do would - and I'm sure everyone would be accepting of that!

Black box policies aren't for everyone, and no one ever said they were.

Seriously, dose anyone have any evidence that this is in anyway the case? Or is it made up paranoid nonsense? I would put a lot of money on the latter.

The endgame will be for every single vehicle on the road to have one.

Makes me sad.

My sister had one and got sent a bill for an extra £300 two months after taking out the policy.

I've not seen anything in her driving to suggest she's any worse than the average female, I imagine as she lives on twisty back road it's classed that as 'bad driving' and ratcheted up the price.

I'd not touch one on a million years, it's just another way of robbing the motorist.

They can be blocked.
Drive how you want when it's blocked then take the blocker off for a day or two and drive how they want you to.

Going to be going for a fixed price telematics box soon. AFAIK they just use the box for research on how you drive. It's about £1000 cheaper than going with any other insurer.

Another friend has fixed price telematics and by all means is not a slow driver and hasn't had a problem.

Exactly.

Only a matter of time before someone has enthusiastic, but legal, driving history used against them at claim time.

Thin end of the wedge for road charging too.

The insurers want everyone to have one and then can offer truly individual pricing.

That said, I would never want one. My commute to work, and work related mileage, is all rural twisty roads with lots of braking and lots of acceleration, along with some quite safe, but tight, corners. No doubt that the box would think Im the incarnation of Mussolini and price accordingly, whereas the levels of observation and forward planning are considerably better than your average school run mum who does 4 miles through the village in slow moving traffic.
