I bought what I thought was a bargain private plate on eBay at the start of the year. Received the V750 in the post with seller's address, signed by the seller in section 6 ready for me to complete with assignment fee already paid.

For one reason or another, I have forgotten about it and just rediscovered the document this week - of course it has now expired.

I've spent some time online searching on this topic but have found it all quite confusing. Can anyone help shed any light on what my options are if I wanted to put the reg on my car or even if I wanted to sell on?

You have to contact the DVLA, as they can hold onto the plate in your name for a short while and may let you re-register it as your own, or it has now gone back into the pool.

Just write back to them apologising, they'll want a cheque for £25 per year.

Except they won't have the plate in my name at all because I have not registered my name against it - for all the DVLA know the V750 is still residing with the person I bought it from.

Daft of me I know, but it was a spur of the moment thing and my first foray into the world of private plates so was a bit naive as to the process. Didn't cost a fortune but would be nice to know if there is a way to avoid it being a total loss!

Same position as me, mine expired just before I got a car to put it on! Was considering writing to the previous owner of the plate to see if he would renew it for me. Their details will be on the v750.

Sign it with the same date as the seller and post it?

UPDATE: So I sent the V750 back to the DVLA with the nominee details completed in my name and a cheque for £50 with an apology for being late. I have just received it back with the original owner still listed as the Puchaser (though with my address) and me as the nominee.

Good news is that I now have until September 2014 to assign it to a vehicle. But it seems that in order to do so I still need the signature of the Purchaser (who sold it to me over a year ago now). Is the only way to do it to send it back to them (I still have their address) and ask them nicely to sign it?

And if I chose to sell it on rather than put it on my car, do I have that option?

At present I can't see how the Purchaser name can ever change...? Well confused!

Anyone shed any light?

The purchasers name CAN NOT be changed on the V750. Only when the plate is assigned to a vehicle and then put back on retention can the details be changed as shown on the new V5,but you can change the nominee name and the purchasers address as many time as you like at £25 ago.....
