So I was going to buy my mate's Boxster, but a specialist inspection revealed too much that would need sorting over the next couple of years. Lovely drive, even in basic 2.7 guise, but it was an 02 plate and felt a bit old.

I ruled out the Boxster as newer ones seem to command a lot of money, and the potential repair bills worry me. In truth, I don't like the looks either.

Tried an SLK 280. Pre-08 facelift. Great performance but it drove like a lump. Too heavy, hated the auto box.

Tried an SLK 200. Post-08 facelift. Much better drive, auto box still horrible, fairly gutless.

(How can the difference between 231 and 184 Hp feel so big?)

Have to say that both SLKs disappointed me, other than the power of the 280. Looks great, build lovely, but they both left me feeling a bit 'meh'.

Tried an MX-5 2.0 today. First time ever. Great to drive, lovely box, plenty of toys, quick-ish but sooooo noisy. Also the pedals appear to be ridiculously positioned. Way too far right.

So now I'm considering a Z4. Certainly a 6 cylinder model, because having tasted the power of the 3 litre SLK I'm hooked. (Much quicker than the Boxster but I perhaps didn't hoon it properly).

I'm being a bit fussy maybe, but I want to buy the right car and the other alternatives of a TT or S2000 just don't appeal.

I suspect it's Z4 or nothing now, though the MX5 might get another look.

Buy a Ka Roadster and set it on fire every time you drive it.

Most such debates lead to the traditional "Z4 or Boxster" question. IMO Boxster is a genuine sportscar and Z4 is a 2-seat BMW.

You haven't mentioned the "Lotus" word. Lotus deliver a genuine sportscar but would leave you with the question, "Do I want to live with this every day?".

Also have you driven an S2000?

Being a Honda Fanboy, it's my responsibility to tell you that the S2000 is amazing and fun and better than ze germans (to be a passenger in)

I think that AMG SLK would cost too much to run. Wouldn't mind if it wasn't quite so close to the top of my budget.
Z3 M doesn't do it for me, never liked the look of them.
S2000 - Was never really on the radar, but I will take a look.

3 litre Z4 is the best all rounder.

This Si model has just had a winter price cut as I was watching it being in the same situation as you.
