Can't do wheelspin on 170bhp RWD on dry. Why?
Discussion
Hello,
I have some issues with spinning rear wheels on dry tarmac. The thing is - I have E36 323i (I6, 170 bhp, 245nm/4000rpm).
What's my problem - I've tried to do some quick starts, just to see what that car can do. I've put it in the 1st gear, rev the engine to 4,5k rpm and quickly released the clutch and gave it full throttle. What happened was that the car didn't spin wheels at all, instead it started to accelerate, but rather slowly, the revs first went up to 5k and then slowly began to fall as the car was accelerating until the clutch finally engaged. In other words, it felt like I was slowly releasing the clutch and holding it partially engaged during acceleration. It didn't engange all of sudden.
So the engine is roaring, but accelerates unwillingly, like if I had some automatic transmission. I guess the clutch is slipping. However, the clutch slips ONLY when I want to do rapid start, i.e. rev the engine and release clutch. When the clutch is already engaged, it won't slip at all. I have 205/55/16 winter tyres, it was dry.
I mean - I've managed to do wheelspin with an old golf III with shabby 55kW much more easily than with 170 bhp rwd car. Please, don't think I want to destroy my car, I just wanted to try this. It is my precious
So my question is - can the clutch be slipping only when moving off hard, but when the clutch is already engaged, it doesn't slip at all? I tried highway pull on 5th gear and no sign of slipping, hard acceleration on 1st,2nd and 3rd gear and again, all is fine. (my odometer reads 220 000 km, not sure if clutch is still original).
P.S. I removed CDV (clutch delay valve), which I thought was the reason, why can't I spin my wheels when moving off.
Thanks for the answers in advance.

It Should do it just drop the clutch at high revs.
Years ago I had a nice 323 2.5 24v it was on 17" 225/45 tyres and it had far more grip than power but it could be provoked into wheel spin.
Does your one have a traction Control/acs switch in front of gear lever? if so switch it off and try again.

Yes, ASC is the first thing I usually turn off after starting the engine.
With the tyres, no can do, local laws command drivers to use winter tyres from November to the end of April. :-/
RWD cossie wil - I thought that hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear is still heavy load (i tried it with 4 people onboard and some stuff in boot).
Can't it be rear diff slipping? But you're right, it is probably the clutch. How long can it still last considered I drive 50% motorway, 25% city and 25 b roads and it doesn't yet slip during normal load?
SV8Predator - yeah, I know! Even my grandpa with hyundai getz 75bhp can sometimes spin the wheels at intersection... :-D
P.S. I don't want to troll anyone, this just drives me nuts. I shouldn't have sold my Peugeot 205 GTi, that car was pure pleasure. But I wanted to try RWD...

If it was doing this without your foot on the clutch pedal it does sound like it was slipping. naked snake said:

Rear diff can't slip, its mechanical. your clutch isn't slipping under normal conditions, only when you abnormally load it, ie dumping full torque into it against a stationary car with reasonable grip. Once you are rolling there is less force used in driving the car forward than there is in trying to spin the clutch on the flywheel.

Yes, I released the clutch quickly. Maybe I should make a video, but I don't know if I want to abuse the clutch even more, when it works just fine during normal driving. The thing is,I didn't smell anything burning, which is quite normal, when the clutch slips.
