Transferring a plate - the age old question

I'm selling a car to a friend. We both have private plates on our cars. I am putting mine on retention, he is transferring his over to my old car the one he is buying.

Can someone just confirm course of action. I plan to go to the "local" DVLA office (hardly local) with all the paperwork, say put that on retention and transfer that plate over. Is it that simple? Do we both need to be there?

I know it's hardly rocket science, but these places only ever seem to be open when I, and he are at work, so want to make sure if I take a few hours off I have everything I need.

Don't go to the local office they'll just post it to DVLA so you might as well post it yourself

Where do you get the forms from, online I guess.

I assumed it was quicker to sort out in person? Maybe not.
