While applauding a national road safety week, is anyone else dubious that some of these measures are really to increase road safety and that it's not being led by the right group?

Aah National Road Safety Week. I was greeted by an e-mail from corporate on the subject this morning. We are told that it is an 'initiative co-ordinated by Brake, with the support of the Department for Transport'. Fine.

But then the e-mail goes on to describe what my company is doing in support. Apparently they are getting people from 'Merityre' in to perform a safety check the tyres and windscreens of the staff cars in the car park.

Apparently Thursday has been given the snappy new title of "check your lights on these dark nights day", and we are encouraged to check that our lights are working with the help of colleagues.

I don't know whether to be annoyed by the sheer half-arsedness of it all or grateful that 'Brake' isn't managing to push it's 'speed offencive' agenda on us and instead is having to limit it's activities to putting Merityre business cards under my windscreen wiper as my front tyres are down to 3mm...

It's pathetic that they need a special day to get people to check if their fking lights work! Seems there are so many drivers that just jump in the car and go not caring about much other than they haven't hit anything and it'll squeeze through the MOT.

At least in the link they're only pushing people to go 20mph around houses and pedestrian heavy areas as opposed to every 30. Good luck to them though as from what I've seen nobody sticks to 30mph as it is.

Brake are still banging the speed drum. We've got posters around our office this week with pictures of dead children on them.

Rather than check lights that cmpany should get a motor factors on sight to check and replace any blown bulbs one pisstake is that modern car design means soe bulbs are virtually impossible to change without tools and are best left for the dealer, the problem is this becomes a when the owner/ driver can be arsed situation.

I can imagine they all wander around just thinking about how many children have died since they last blinked.

BRAKE hired an IT whizz kid, who then promised to double their connection speed, so they sacked him on the spot.

Steady fellows what we need are real road safety initiatives,

Remember this crash
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-24757748
A school minibus crashes into a stationary road works truck on the hard shoulder with a keep left (not right ) arrow on the back of it frown

The solution was to ban crew bus type rear seats in landrovers etc
and now trying to prevent group minibuses towing a trailer load of canoes.
Are those the solutions youd have chosen?

IMHO they may talk nonsense around speeding, but I think that checking lights and tyres is a good idea, based on the number of cars I see with odd lights not working these days smile
