Lovely, comfy places to sit for £10k or less
Discussion
My Civic will probably out-live the Earth and I can't really fault it...except it's not exactly comfortable or a welcoming place to be when sat in traffic on a cold Tuesday. The gearbox is also slack.
My commute is a pain in the arse, short drive on mainly A & B roads with lots of queing traffic. I'm thinking about what I could buy for less than ten bags that would be a cosseting place to be but would also retain an element of practicality (some sort of boot and 4 seats would be minimum). I am only 30 but have decided when it comes to cars I want to be an old man.
Petrol auto would be the desired combination because I can't be arsed with clutch work in traffic anymore!
Thoughts at present are an E63 645i or a Merc CLS350/500. What else should I consider?
P.S. Bork-factor needs to be acceptable. My Civic costs me very little and therefore I am expecting an uplift in running costs but I don't want my wallet to be raped, then flipped and bum-raped.

Previously I ran a Merc CLK500. That was a wonderful car with more than enough straight line performance to put the frighteners on much more outwardly quicker cars. It was, however, quite thirsty being a 5.0 v8. Servicing wasn't cheap either with 16 spark plugs to replace. It never once let me down, though.
I currently run an E63 630i coupe, which is fantastic. Nice and smooth and quiet with sufficient performance and relatively economical. 28 - 30mpg combined

Schmalex - what have the running costs of the 6er been like since you purchased it?I currently run an E63 630i coupe, which is fantastic. Nice and smooth and quiet with sufficient performance and relatively economical. 28 - 30mpg combined
Did you test the V8s?
Comfortable, decent image, Toys R Us spec and unlikely to ever go wrong...

I didn't test the V8's, as I'd had 3 V8's in a row (S4, Merc & FFRR) and was quite happy with the smaller engine - all my driving is either in heavy town traffic or on a busy motorway, so I never really get a chance to enjoy the extra power of the V8. Did you test the V8s?
The running costs on the 6 have been quite reasonable, really (although, I did have to give the first one I bought back due to a faulty gearbox). I've not had to put it through a service yet, but I was quoted £130ish for an oil change by a BMW franchise. They have variable servicing, so you can end up popping back to the dealer a couple of times on the trot if they ping up quickly. You can check the service status on the idrive very simply, though.

If you have lots of stop start traffic the last thing you want is a car with a big engine and firm springs. It will cost you a fortune for the amount of miles you do even if it's a short ish drive and won't waft nicely. Honestly the nicest car I've ever driven in terms of comfort is (puts flame retardant overalls and bio-hazard suit on) a Lexus RX400 hybrid. I kid not. A Lexus RX400 hybrid is the nicest place to be if you want to waft and listen to music in a quiet space while sitting in traffic. Most comfortable car ever this includes Range Rovers/7 series/E class and any others I've drive I can't remember. Very quiet with no engine noise most of the time, a good stereo (slightly better if it's the optional one), quick enough from 0-over legal limits. 30 something mpg however you drive it and very reliable. No squeaks, no rattles, no fuss. The 450 really isn't any better just much better Sat Nav and more bling! The only downside to the whole car is that the steering wheel is slightly offset but this is common to a lot of cars.My commute is a pain in the arse, short drive on mainly A & B roads with lots of queing traffic. I do "like" the Lexus RX and have previously looked at these but the interiors tend to be pretty heinous.
Presumably the 6 series in non "sport" guise (is that possible?) without RFT or the CLS with the smallest wheels I can find would be pretty wafty?
FFRR without stupid oversized wheels would be top of the list if funds were unlimited!

Each to their own, but for £10k of my own money, I'd be questioning my life choices if I found myself walking back to that thing in a carpark. 6 Series sounds like a good option. Jaguar XJ (although comments noted regarding violation of your wallet)? Older fully-loaded BMW 5- or 7- series and pocket a few £k?

The first 6 series I bought was non-sport. It wasn't that great to be honest. It had 18" instead of 19" wheels, still fitted with RFT and sPresumably the 6 series in non "sport" guise (is that possible?) without RFT or the CLS with the smallest wheels I can find would be pretty wafty?

tty seats. It just wasn't as nice a place to be as the SportI'd go for an X350 shape XJ6. You can pick up a decent one for under £5k and they're extremely comfortable and don't cost a fortune to run. Should you want a bit more power and don't mind higher running costs you could spend a couple of k extra and get an XJR.

^that's my XJ6 - doesn't get much more "old man" than that, and I'm considerably younger than 30

E39 540i was a "cheap" consideration but I certainly like the idea of:
a) the newer BMW as I would have the option of taking out the BMW extended warranty; or
b) the Lexus because the hybrid would suit the commute (a lot of 5mph max queuing to traffic lights etc) and the reliability factor.
