New engine fitted to car
Discussion
A friend purchased a 2004 Passat 2.5 TDI last month. Dealer trading from home, claimed it has FSH, cambelt just done, viewed car, all seemed fine, purchase made.
He showed me the car and I noted it wasn't heating up properly. No issue probably just needs a thermostat.
Took it I'm for the stat and was told it has a new engine fitted. Rung the guy that did the cambelt who confirms a new engine was fitted.
Does he have any comeback to the dealer? I told him not but thought I'd check first.

Other than the heating up issue is there anything else wrong with it?
If not, as before - no hope for redress over it having a new engine (if your friend isn't happy about that). Little hope for redress after a month on the thermostat issue (may have taken the thermostat out due to overheating, often a bodge remedy for a broken fan / water temperature switch) - especially as a dodgy dealer from home type person.
Unless the dealer specifically said "Has original engine fitted" then he hasn't misrepresented anything.

I would hate to buy a car with an engine with less miles then I thought it had on it, sounds terrible. I really sympathise with your friend OP.
He reckon it has 200k.....Sorry folks, trying to rush type. Not been clear.
He has bought a Passat with 120k and FSH.
He then finds out it has had an engine change. The garage, who is independent in all this, states the seller provided car and sourced his own engine.
Based not the fact the car is pretty old, and that the seller sourced his own engine and didn't communicate it at sale implies, only implies, that it has equally had some use through its life.
The issue is that he bought a car in good faith with FSH, yet the engine is now a mystery. He has convinced himself it was sourced from a scrap yard off a high mileage car and the fact the thermostat doesn't work, cambelt off job, and vibration from the engine at 2.5k suggests it may not be the best example.
I do believe he has no come back but thought I'd bounce it off people. I've suggested he chalks it up to experience and gets a years use out of it.

why would you mention that when trying to sell the car.
When buying privately its presumable to save a few quid, you get no comeback.
By all means pay a bit more and buy from a reputable (yes there are some) trader and you should have some form of comeback.
In this instance even if it were off a larger trader, I fail to see what they could do other than fix any issue within 3months.
