On the back of a thread regarding insurance trackers, it got me thinking that with road pricing, trackers, CO2s and the pace of technology, we must be at the point where the government could in the near future make it compulsory rhat cars are fitted with tracking devices or speed limiters.

This got me thinking, what is the latest era of cars that you could buy which are fun, involving, reliable enough to drive for the rest of your life but which are old enough so they don't have the electronics which might be required for the above initiatives?

FWIW my toy is a 993 but i suspect this is too modern?

Also thinking that with the insurance blackboxes, surely a lotus elise would be good fun at sensible speeds?

My ideas?

Mk 1 Elise

E46 M3

Vauxhall Monaro

... and of course, don't forget the venerable MX5, a requirement of any such thread.

I'm hoping my modified 69 beetle will give me an option for that. Have even thought that I could convert to positive earth in order to baffle them hehe

Anything pre-OBD2, assuming the insurers will need that of course!

Anything with a cable throttle should be ok

Lotus Carlton. I think that'll be the choice of Mad Leins Beyond Thunderdome

Would the lotus carlton have obd1?
What data can insurers or other agencies obtain from obd1? And how mechanical are engines from this era?

Have you read the OP?

I agree that my examples are borderline but I'm trying to answer the question "what's the latest".

This for a start. My vote goes for non turbo, more than 4 cylinders, petrol and preferably on ITB's

For me it would be a 240Z

Prices have now gone up out of my reach so will settle for an RX7, although I guess that won't be to hard to "black box"

850 T5/R - OBD, admittedly, but wouldn't have thought too much to glean from there (my old shape V70's OBD was never touched at inspection time for emissions etc.).

Apart from that, loving Leins' suggestion which in my case would be a Lotus Omega for the steering wheel to be sitting in the 'right' place.

944 turbo, a good one which plenty aren't, is under rated and under valued. Bought one 6 years ago and I doubt I'd sell it unless I could afford a GT2/3.

Me too, nearly four years ago now, with this specific issue in mind.

I have no doubt that before it became compulsory there would be delimiters / blockers on Ebay
