One of the cars was due for insurance renewal yesterday..........so I did the usual on the comparison sites and picked a quote to go with (same insurers as it happens but cheaper than their posted quote)

However I digress, whilst doing the comparisons, for the first time ever I used the facilities to change the parameters....ie no named driver, upping the excess, limiting the mileage a bit more etc............all made just coppers difference so I stuck with what I already had.

Now here's what baffled me............simply out of curiosity I swapped it to TPFT instead of Fully comp...............the 140 quotes ALL rocketed upwards adding ££££s to the proposed premium scratchchin

Why is that then? I remember as an 18 year old TPFT was the only way to go as it was miles cheaper than the coveted Fully Comp.

Have things changed now? It surprised me as I say.

I've found the same.

It's because everyone ASSUMES TPFT is cheaper and lots of young drivers take out that sort of policy without even looking at fully comp.

As a result the price is pushed up.

It was cheaper 5 years ago though when I was driving cheap old cars at 19.

Now, even on an old car (admittedly, somewhat more performance available), FC is cheaper. Considerably.

Wonder if it's an age thing? Certainly car age seems to have something to do with it - can't even get TPFT quotes that are anything like sensible on recent cars regardless of how cheap they are.

The reasons behind it are that someone who only takes out TPFT (as TP Only is almost impossible to get now) on their vehicle is simply fulfilling their legal obligation to hold valid motor insurance, whereas a driver who takes out FC is more 'bothered' about their own vehicle and will be an inherently 'safer' driver.

As with all 'rules' in insurance, this is a HUGE generalisation but you have to put a rule somewhere?!?
