Friend wrote off my car, need a valuation.
Discussion
Hi all,
So about a year ago I lent a friend my old car - I'd just got a new one and didn't need it, whereas he's just moved to a new part of the country, had no job and no car. I decided that it would help him out with getting a job if he had a car.
Fast-forward a year, and I've got a call to say he's planted into a barrier and written it off.
He's been offered £90 for scrap for it, though I'd quite like some more because I'd given him a perfectly usable car, and he'd be returning some saucepans...! So, down to how much. Surely it would be fair if he gave me the market value of whatever the car was worth before he crashed it?
To that end, does anyone have a subscription to Glass's/Parker's etc who could run a quick valuation so I could provide hard 'evidence' of what it's worth. In my opinion it'd be worth £450 any day of the week, whereas he seems to think it was worth £250 tops. It's not a lot of money but I haven't got much of it...!
Any other suggestions?
It's a 1999 Ford Focus Zetec, 1.8, 5dr, Silver, 138,000 miles. Reg is T367OCF.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Given that he's also had a years use of the tyres and had a years MOT from you (or did he pay for it?), i'd say £450 is a good price for the car.
What was the arrangement between you though - was he handing the car back at some point, or planning on paying for it when he had the money?

What I was thinkinh. You make it sounds like you've let your friend with no cash have a car and run it without insurance. If that's the case I don't know what to say.
Oh no obviously not, but he elected for a £500 excess (don't ask...) so there's no point getting insurance involved.I'd want £450 minimum to be honest.
You've lent him a car for an entire year, he's stuck it in a barrier and I get the impression he wants to give you scrap value and move on. Doesn't sound like a decent friend to me, if I were in his situation I'd be paying whatever you asked plus £50 and a beer.

I assume he was happily borrowing the car and you weren't pressing for its return, in which case why don't you have him buy another car and use it for a while on the agreement he gives it to you once he has finished with it? Essentially, this new car would be yours and you'd be continuing to lend it to him.
They say you should never lend anything to a friend you expect to be returned. I think that's the best way to avoid causing hurt feelings in such matters, though it sounds as though you were just trying to be a good mate.

How adamant is he that its worth £250? If he is hell bent on not stumping up more then how will you get the extra £200? If he is only willing to give you £250 I would say that's all you are getting. What is left of the friendship after that depends on how much you are willing to let go and how far he is willing to take advantage.
