Hi all,

Just for a bit of fun. I'll start by saying that I'm not perfect, but was told off about my lane discipline whilst giving someone a lift. I think on reflection I may have been in the wrong and thought I'd ask.

I was in the same lane as the Mercedes in this picture and had crossed the junction, as they would have from a stop at the red lights behind them. I had come straight across the junction.

You can see that it becomes three lanes, bus, straight ahead and turn right. I merged into the straight ahead lane (lane two) and the car behind me in the left lane (lane one) who was blocked by a bus became the aggressor. To me if I had indicated right it would indicate that I do not wish to go straight ahead. Also to indicate left would have indicated that I wanted to move into the bus lane/bus stop (lane one).

So do I owe them a beer? We have a friendly bet on.

If you were ahead of the guy to the inside he ought to have been giving way to you and looking to move out behind. It's just common sense. Being in the outside lane at the junction when you can see buses ahead is sensible to avoid getting stuck behind them, he obviously wasn't planning ahead.

On my way home from work I negotiate a junction where traffic from my direction is brought into the outside of two lanes. Traffic in the inside lane is generally queuing, rendering it impossible to move in behind them. People in the inside lane refusing to merge in turn with those in the outside lane just contributes to the gridlock, especially when they block the junction with a side road at the point just after the lanes merge rather than leave a gap someone might move into.
