I saw a couple of air intakes on early Escorts at the classic car show on Sunday. The first one, I thought someone had just rested an exhaust back box on top of the engine. I walked on and saw another. Are these actually air intakes?

A few cars of various makes had air boxes like that, often with twin pipe intakes.
Most standard Escorts, Cortinas etc would have had a round pancake air box with a single nozzle containing a flap with sucked air from the exhaust manifold when cold.

My Austin A40 had a conical box. Most had a central screw and wing nut and you could change the filter in 5 minutes, unlike now.
