Boring thread alert

I just sold a second hand tyre on ebay. It has 6mm of tread accross the 3 main groves but there is more wear to the far edge of one shoulder. I explained this in the advert and put a very clear high resolution picture to show the level of wear.

Posted the tyre yesterday. Buyer has messaged me tonight (before receiving)to say she has only just seen the photo with the shoulder wear and now wants a refund..

Now if it came to a paypal dispute I'm fairly confident I would win because the item is as described. But if I win she will no doubt vindictively leave me negavtive feedback even though I've done nothing wrong. As a new seller the last thing I need is negative feedback.

She paid £30 plus £12 p&p. I'm going to try and reason with her first. But if it came to it should I try and refund her just the £30 or the full amount? If shes going to leave me negative feedback for not refunding the postage then I may as well not refund her a penny.

Or should I take the bad feeback, stick two fingers up to her and buy/sell a load of things to get my score up to 99%?

Some people might be wondering why I'm even giving her the time of day but unfortunately the way ebay works gives most of the power to the buyers and very little to the sellers.

Really??

How stupid is the ebay system if that's the case

I don't sell on ebay, only buy, because I know it's a PITA for sellers, but that's madness...

If you have a message saying she has only just seen the photo then I would think you have a fairly strong case, if it gets to a dispute stage.

I thought you could appeal feedback?

Ebay is not on your side, regardless of what you think.

Get her to return the item (is she really going to pay another 12 to send it back?) and only then refund.

Unless of cause ebay does it for you in the meantime, which it has been know to do.

You have to follow their procedures to the letter to get any form of result, and in this case that means getting her to send it back (tracked).

And don't forget that she may be trying to rip you off but complaining AFTER you sent it in the hope you will "knock a bit off". Just stick to "return it to me for refund" in that case.

I should win a dispute because I went out of my way to describe it properly and I have it on record that she didn't read the advert properly. But it's ridiculous that people can still leave eachother feedback after a dispute since everyone is just going to give the other negative!

To be honest I'd be happy to knock a bit off for an easy life but £42 full refund + £12 postage each way is getting steep, I'd have been better off throwing the damned thing in the bin!

Please bear in mind if this is an Ebay "chancer" (there's a LOT of them out there) they may well leave you negative feedback even if you do fully refund.

If you're a new user, have you considered writing off this account and starting a new one?

Not a bad idea, you could have one for selling and one for buying?

If they find in your favour bad feedback will be removed.

Offer full refund based on return of item, based on them not seeing photo (include this info)

They will not return the item

They will however open a case, freeze your PayPal, and lose.

When they do, feedback is removed, if it doesn't automatically call the resolution center and they will do it for you.

Ebay idiots, amazing.

It depends on what you've got in your returns policy but as long as it doesn't state you'll pay the return postage you don't have to pay their return postage. If it was a "free p&p" on the original sale then yes you're stuffed for your postage to the buyer but otherwise you don't repay that either.

Ebay can be a disaster - and don't assume common sense will prevail.

Generally the BUYER has to pay for the return postage

but the SELLER has to give a full refund (including the postage paid to send the item)

Even when buying from a trader Ebay does NOT honour the Distance Selling Regs and insists the buyer pays to return the item even if it's not as described.

Oh and using Interparcel means you can send a tyre for less than £9

Ebay will ALWAYS side with the buyer, the buyer could argue black was white and ebay would agree with them

Just offer a refund and be prepared to lick the buyers rectum

It's just not worth the hassle trying to argue even if your in the right and a waste and will only lead to you getting nothing but negative feedback.

Ebay will probably give them a refund and tell them to 'dispose of the item'

I remember selling a new VW part with stamps in a VW box with a VW receipt i got when i bought it from a dealer.

Buyer claimed fake part and i argued my case and the buyer backed down (or so i thought). About two weeks later ebay refunded the buyer and told them to 'dispose' of the item.

Buyer relisted the item on the same account using my photographs

eBay went from a neat idea into a haven for chancers, scumbags, thieves and fraudsters. They charge a vast sum of money yet provide almost no service. 10% commission yet you can't even phone them.

The only way to behave is to never use the site, never give them any of your money, and post your bad experiences on every forum you ever come across.

No service, you mean other than being one of the biggest on-line retailing outlets in the uk and giving you direct access the all their customers.

I sold 1000's of items on there with few problems. Few problems with buying also. If one seller or buyer is a problem does not mean next one will be.

You know what he means - talking to an Indian call centre where they just repeat the Ebay rules - which contradict UK law is less than helpful.

Ebay / Paypal freezing accounts for no reason and still having no one to talk to - it's disgraceful

I wish Google would set up a competitor site - they couldn't do it worse.

Just to let people know what happend, she retuned it to me and I refunded her what she paid me. So I'm only out of pocket for postage one way. No (negative) feeback given, so on the whole a satisfactory outcome.

It isn't really though as you're out the postage, time, hassle and probably fees, for her stupidity.

However - with Ebay it's about as good as you can hope for.
