I'm basically at the end of my tether with this search. My Mum runs a rural post office and many of the routes are offroad and need something with decent ground clearance in the summer and in the winter a fairly serious 4x4. We've got by with an x-trail on winter tyres but that has died so are thinking of something a bit more serious. Budget is up to 7K and it would be handy if it could double as a second car, i.e not a defender. Been looking at 3.0 CRD Grand Chrokees but the tax is a killer. Answers on a postcard

That's kind of what I was thinking as they fit the bill. I suppose any big 4x4 of that era will hit you on the tax but it just needs to do the job really. Thinking of having a look at this one:

I do like the top one, as I always prefer a private seller and that one looks good from the ad. The one I posted is at a local garage (not a car dealer) with a good rep so that's why I fancied it.

Kia Sorento with HANKOOK DYNAPRO A/T tyres. Had mine five years goes anywhere and with those tyres on laughs at a foot of snow. Mines an older 04 model, with a manual box,so reasonable roadtax, the autos are silly road tax.

Does it need to be big? If not, I'd go with a Forester. Subarus are hard to beat in the snow.

For £7k your probably better with the Jeeps.
You might get and early Discovery 3 for that money - but it'll probably below spec; same with land cruisers.

Or - or new Daicia might be in that price range.

It depends how 'serious' a 4x4 you need.

If it doesnt need to be Jeep sized, then a Forester is a good call...

Op said he wants ground clearance - and more ground clearance and than an xtrail.
That rules out any Subaru type thing.

2009 Grand Cherokee, 8.5 inches clearance.
2009 Subaru Forrester, 8.9 inches clearance.

X-trail, 8.2 inches.

Wow... if that's correct then that's impressive as it sure doesn't look like it has any more clearance than the Cherokee.

...with that in mind my money would be with the Forester
