Been looking to buy something I want to drive as opposed to being sensible and boring.
I've been looking at vans - really enjoy driving position and size of boot for when I transport crap about - but insurance is nearly double what I pay now.
I've always fancied a 4x4 but nothing particularly stood out to me except the old ones like the hilux surf.
From what I've read they're bullet proof, gen 3's are the one to aim for and they're good both on and off road. Insurance is cheap aswell.

Which is better auto or manual?
What's real world mpg like? I'm used to 50mpg but my miles are low as you'll read below.

I currently do 20-40 personal miles and maybe 60-100 work miles at the moment, chances are that won't increase.

Will it survive short journeys? It's normally 16 mile round trip to shopper market.

What to look out for on them? Will probably be around 100k on clock as looking to spend sub £4k but have up to £7k ish

They do have a good reputation, I know a couple of owners and they seem pretty happy with them.

MPG will be nearer half of what your are currently getting though.

I had one and the engine was a beauty , loved the 2 yrs I had the surf, towed loads (boats and diggers), never missed a beat.

Mine was an auto, non intercooler.

Only sold as not a commercial , so unable to run through business,

Buy one, you won't regret it.

As I spend about £100 a month fuel now it's not going to hurt the bank biggrin

Is there any reason to avoid one that's had a suspension lift or anything?

As long as its done properly it shouldn't be a problem.

Some of the 3.0td (non-intercooled) motors have a bit of a reputation for doing head gaskets/heads, but certainly nowhere near as bad as the old 2.4td - AFAIK its mostly a maintenance issue with the 3.0, the cooling system needs to be kept in good order.

To be honest I was going to get as late as possible and possibly look at uprated intercooler, exhaust and filter depending on price.
I know the 2.4 is to avoid, is it gen 2 3.0 that has cooling issues?

Good call, apparently on par if not better on fuel than diesel? Seems strange.
Also quite fancy the 3.4 now you've pointed out a petrol! biggrin

I had to have a look at them on Ebay after your initial post, the petrol stood out to me.
But if there's a bigger petrol I'd probably want that if possible too.

Only slight problem I have is wbac will only give £3.5k for my car when it's worth £6k easy! Might be able to get them to hold it with a deposit whilst i try a quick sale scratchchin

I suppose it depends on why they are selling, if they need the cash quick too. smile

But worth a try.

If it's there in about 2 weeks max I should be able to buy it out right but then I'll have 2 cars and will need both insured unless I take one off the road in the garden? laugh
Need a drive frown

Just part of the hassle of buying and selling privately.

I usually end up with 2 or none when changing.

Though having said that I also have a work vehicle as well, so actually it's usually 3 or 1 when getting a 'new' car.

There's a dedicated UK surf forum.
Google 'yotasurf' and you'll find it - great for info and advice.

I had a 3rd gen for about 4 years.
Excellent car.
Went to the Alps several times, up and down Scotland and never missed a beat.

I forget which gen is which but its the earlier (pre-intercooled) 3.0 motors that are more likely to have problems, so you should be fine going for the later ones.
