S60 2.4T advice
Discussion
Hello All,
There is a 2002 S60 2.4T manual on ebay, which is local to me in Bournemouth. I quite fancy it but have never bid on an ebay car before. Is it against protocol to ask to view/drive it ahead of bidding?
Assuming I could look at it is there anything specific I should be looking out for on these? I like the idea of the 2.4T and the manual box and it has a nice spec including heated seats and (possibly, having googled images for comparison
) the hu-800 stereo.
Any 2.4T owners on here?
Thanks all.
P.s. Having blown it's cover I don't mind if someone else on here buys it as long as they give a FULL review to me personally so I can buy another one having gained more knowledge!

I thought the HU803 radio was the one to have? I had it in my S60 T5, it's a really powerful stereo with good sound quality too. Not sure about 2.4T unless you're meaning the more powerful version which effectively became the later model T5, in which case I'd say go for it, absolutely brilliant engines that are capable of making a lot more power with just a remap. Watch for oil consumption on the 5-cyl Volvo units though and beware all auto boxes on S60's.
You want the HU-803 because it is excellent.
Expect front wishbones and a few other bushes to be worn. Much of the reputationthese have for being s
t st going round corners is down to tired suspension. A refreshed car is a good thing indeed. Mine drives like a new car. Low speed knocking noises are usually drop links so cheap as chips.
My advice. Buy a T5

I recommend belts on the volvo 5 cylinders are done pref every 40k or 5years or at very latest 60k or 5 years - the belts deteriorate with age more so than mileage - but 96k is too long to wait.
2.4 t is a great engine and far less laggy than the the HPT T5 - check under the oil cap for sludge, start it up, warm it up and pull the dipstick and check for smoke - sign of a blocked breather - the volvo 5cylinder is very sensitive to oil and fuel type if it's been run on the wrong oil it will block its breather system and blow the rear main seal.
Give the engine a boot in neutral and watch the rev counter - it should catch the revs at around 1200- 1300rpm and settle back down to around 900rpm when warm. If they bog down then recover or become unsteady it's a dirty ETM system
Check the top engine mount for cracks and check the brake servo for signs iof the master cylinder leaking - paint will be bubbling below it
Check for knocks and chatters from the suspension especially at the front end - common to wear out drop links and wishbone bushes
Finally, check the rear brake discs are clean and not blue from over heating as they are prone to seizing calipers
Common electrical probs are the visual display unit thing on the dash and light control modules failing
Great cars for the money though

Thanks morgrp for your helpful post. I will store that for future reference!
This didn't go anywhere in the end. After a couple of less than helpful replies from the seller i asked to see it and he didn't reply at all! The dvla vehicle enquiry service didn't recognise the number plate either, which whilst probably something easily explained this all meant I wasn't going anywhere near bidding!
Shame because it looked promising.
Will have to wait until another day!
Thanks again for your help.

I've had a think and I don't think anybody has mentioned one big thing with these...
The turning circle of a lorry! They have steering blocks to restrict the steering lock. Not necessarily a bad thing but it is a pain if you're used to doing 3-pointers quickly or need to go back on yourself on a mini/small roundabout.

Also, the 2.3 T5 would definitely be the one to go for over a 2.4T if you're talking circa 2002 (didn't notice the year before), the later 2.4T 260hp which replaced it would then be the one to go for in a newer car.
HU803
Winter pack (heated seats)
Lock the doors remotely and try the drivers door, if it opens you're in trouble. Common fault.
Again, avoid autos unless you know what to look for, they can break very expensively and throw up inconvenient faults on the way there.
Can't think of anything else, best of luck, they are really good cars for not much money.
