Hi folks,

Just a quick question here, I purchased a car that has a private reg but I would like to get it switched back to an age related plate.

Is this going to be a problem if I have no paperwork for the private reg (car repossessed from previous owner)

Many Thanks

Adam

No, the only paperwork required is the V5C and an application form to put it on retention and about £80.

I'm not sure this is right. Doesn't the previous owner still own the private reg? If dvla put it onto retention and give to the new owner, they're passing that title onto the new owner?

The previous owner has no rights to the plate now unless there was a contract of some kind made up at the time of repossession.
You need to fill in a V778 (I think) and you need the log book, MOT certificate and some info from the current tax disc. Send it to Swansea with a cheque for £105 and you'll receive a retention certificate with the VRM on it as well as a new MOT, V5 and tax disc reverted back to the original VRM. You can do whatever you like with the cherished number then.

No one "owns" a reg they are all owned by by DVLA. When you buy one you are buying the right to use it. That right disappears if you fail to put it on retention, if on retention you fail to transfer it to a vehicle or renew each year. The right can be withdrawn if you fail to display legal plates for instance.

So if OP has a V5 in his name showing the plate he can put it on retention. DVLA will re-issue the orginal plate and retention certificate (private plate) in the name of the OP.
You will need to send it off with MOT (if applicable) photocopy of licence disc, £80 fee.

Then you can transfer the plate, sell the plate or just let it lapse.

I stand corrected. Easier than I thought then! Presumably under this scenario then you can just ask them to remove the plate and pay nothing?

I doubt it the DVLA rarely do something for nothing - what's the plate - surely it has a value ?

If you don't want to keep the number you will need the V5,MOT and a copy Tax disc and a covering letter stating you do not want to retain the number and send to DVLA and they will scrap the number (no charge) and return the V5 in your name with MOT/Tax disc with the original age related number for the car.

Some useful info from a similar thread.

Well to draw this topic to a close, I got an email response from the DVLA:

dvla said:
To surrender a vehicle registration number the vehicle keeper will need to apply to:

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1DS

The request will need to include:

• V5C vehicle Registration Certificate

• MOT certificate

• serial number and expiry date from the tax disc

• a letter from the keeper stating that they wish to surrender the plate

If the vehicle is not yet registered in the new keepers name they will need to include a letter of consent from the previous keeper confirming that they do not want to keep the number.

Please note once the request to surrender the number has been approved no facility exists for it to be re-issued or bought back.

The applicant should receive a confirmation letter with the new MOT Certificate and tax disc within 2 weeks of a successful application being received at the DVLA Swansea.

The DVLA will allocate a replacement vehicle registration number to the vehicle. This will normally be the previous registration number of the vehicle. However, if the previous number cannot be returned another age-related number will be issued.

Applicants will receive a new V5C within 6 weeks.
There we go, thanks to the contributors who gave me the correct advice. It seems there is no cost associated with this, apart from getting new plates made up.
