Best Summer/ Winter tyre compromise
Discussion
I just about need a couple of new tyres for my Saab. I'm not totally convinced by getting a full set of winter tyres as I would work from home if need be.
However, I wondered what the best performing Summer tyre is for wintry conditions? Anyone got any views?

I was using Continental sport contact 2 on my Mercedes over the past few years, they were excellent and never saw the need for winter tyres. I've changed this year to Vredestein's (cheaper and wanted to try something else).
During the summer I would say they have been very capable but not as grippy, easpecially in the wet. I've yet to see how they fair up over the winter months.

Cheers, saw that thread but I'm not actually after any winter tyres. Just regular ones that are the best bet for wintry conditions. Was thinking some Uniroyal rainsport 3. Car currently has sportcontact 3s on.

I've currently got a set of Kleber Quadraxer on the V70.
Have been ok over the summer, and I believe (hope?) they will be ok in winter too.
It's a big old diesel barge so 'handling' isn't really that much of an issue.

Anything without a big vee pattern like Uniroyal Rainsport should be ok. I've been fine on Goodyear, Conti etc in the snow
Is the vee pattern bad for snow? Several all season tyres use it. I would've thought it'd be better than a circumferentially grooved tyre like a Continental. I could be wrong. Maybe Continental benefit in cold conditions from the high silica content. HustleRussell said:

Just get some proper "normal" tyres on it and that car can be driven all year round without the slightest difficulty. After all, they did design and build the car in Sweden. Winter tyres for the British climate are IMO one of the great automotive scams.b

Winter tyres for the British climate (surely that varies massively depending on where you live?), are simply something that we never though of or simply didn't believe in a few years ago. British winters aren't getting any warmer, nothing wrong with staying mobile, unless of course you don't need to venture out to earn a living Ozzie?
