So, a few changes in my life (namely; turning 40, moving house, and changing job, which means no longer commuting by car) has led my wandering fingers toward the open arms of the Jaguar Authorised used car website listings.

Have been a long admirer of the XK, think it looks peachy, so am aiming to get behind the wheel of one in the new year.

My budget suits the 5.0l Portfolio Coupé, with suitable examples between 2 and 3 years old, with between 10k and 30k miles on the clock.

From what I can gather, there are 3 generations of this latest incarnation of the XK?

1st gen 4.2l
2nd gen 5.0l with some largely cosmetic updates
3rd gen 5.0l with more largely cosmetic updates

So I would be looking at 2nd gen, and prices based on the above criteria seem to be upwards of 28k to about 40k.

I am entirely new to Jaguar, my history is primarily in BMW straight-six petrols (currently 135i Coupé), so would be interested in any veteran comments or advice.

I would expect the XK to be waftier and softer, quieter and more luxuriant than the BMWs I'm used to. This would also be my first ownership experience of auto - I'm usually a manual stick fan.

Reliability is probably my main concern here - I hear mixed things from the press on these latest generations of Jaguar. Would a good example likely prove trouble-free? Will only be considering XKs from Jaguar dealers under their authorised used car scheme.

I have no idea of running costs or servicing costs - are these comparable to German brand cars?

Any comments here welcomed.

Cheers

ETA: Car will be used for weekend trips for meself and the lady, bit of shopping, that sort of thing. Very low annual mileage. Live in London, and will be commuting by train
