Do 'petrol heads' have a more finely tuned 6th sense for undercover police cars than your average joe?
A couple of friends have recently commented that I always seem to spot these cars and have a kind if 6th sense.
I see it as more of a general awareness of driving and identifying those potential vehicles police could use.
Ie if driving at an average motorway speed I would drop down a bit before over taking certain 5 series models.

Doesn't have to be just 5 series round my way. Over the last few years I've seen a plain Octavia VRS, a Focus RS and an Impreza. Back in the day they had two Sierra Sapphire Cosworths as rapid armed response vehicles. But yes, I think once you know what sort of car they are likely to use, you tend to keep half an eye on them if you're making progress.
Normally I'd agree as through reading about cars we tend to come across info that gives you clues about how to spot such vehicles. Unfortunately it's still easy to get caught out however, as I did once by a really blinged up silver X5. Didn't think 21" wheels featured on most undercover cars...
I've encountered it a few times where for no apparent reason during a drive out somewhere, I've slowed right down, and then encountered a police car, or an obstruction or something I couldn't have known about.
It's an odd sensation.
It happened the last time I was blasting along to Scarborough in the middle of the night, eased off on a straight, and there was a marked unit parked up off a side road. Still got a tug for a quick ID, vehicle check etc. though.

I don't think it's a 6th sense, just a greater awareness of the other vehicles around us and an understanding of the type of cars that the police might be using as unmarked vehicles. Generally a police unmarked vehicle will be < 6 years old, have four doors and will be in a basic colour and will be fairly clean.
Working for the police for 3 years and being a massive Petrolhead does make be more aware and observant and as a result I haven't been pulled yet!
Having said that, I was doing 86mph on the way to Sunday Service on Sunday, I looked in the mirror and the fuzz were right up my arse, I moved into the middle lane and they overtook and sped off.
I'm better at spotting unmarked than marked!

Sometimes it's obvious - 60mph on the A1 at 11pm (minimal traffic, felt like taking it easy) and i've got an Insignia a few feet off my bumper while the rest of traffic goes flying past.
Oh and when i was a yoof i was chased up the road in my ST24 by what i soon found out was a 3.2 Vectra. Got a slight talking to but nowt else thankfully
