E36 M3 vs Renault 5
Discussion
So my colleague seems to think that a standard R5 GT Turbo will destroy a standard E36 M3 Evo in the twisties/urban areas/roundabouts where the M3 is unable to use it's power advantage - apparently this is because FWD is quicker than RWD - other than obviously laughing in his face how can I prove this?

Irrespective of FWD or RWD, while the M3 has a massive power advantage (by 220HP) the R5 has far far lower weight (by 700Kg!) so it's possible that if you've got a number of direction changes the R5 would be quicker but as soon as you got anywhere near straight the M3 would murder it.Also in theory 118HP is far easier to control than 338HP but at the same time mid-80's turbo car! Welcome to Lag city.
I used to own a modified R5 GT turbo (175bhp + revised/uprated suspension) , easily give the M3 a run for its money in a straight line (up to 100 then the M3 would pull away) but in the twisties ? No chance.
Standard R5 GT Turbo was only 115bhp so more of a warm rather than hot hatch with 0-60 taking 7.3

Ive had both and agree with your friend but it would need to be very twisty but on a straight it would be left for dead!Back then the R5 was most definitely a "Hot" hatch and not a lukewarm one, they were quick little cars, the quickest of that Era, Astras, Golf and Escorts were nowhere near.
A well driven one in an urban environment is going to be quick and an M3 driver would have to work hard but it would still be quite a bit quicker.
