Senna at Suzuka (again): Time For Tea?

As referenced earlier by Harris here's a twinkle-toed Senna at Suzuka in his slip-ons

You'll have seen this before in all likelihood. But when Chris referenced it earlier in his blog I couldn't resist hunting it down for a repeat viewing. And if there was ever a Desert Island Discs for car-related YouTube clips this'd have to be up there.

Just check out the ingredients. Senna. A Honda NSX-R. Suzuka. Aviators. Slip-ons and white socks. Even the latter are cool in this context, and that's no mean feat.

Biting my tongue not to segue from that into 'no mean feet either' (damn, just did) if anyone ever asks you 'what is this heel'n'toe thing you keep banging on about?' this is the video you need to show them. His clinical maximum attack driving style is spellbinding too - note his pitlane exit technique having nodded his way through the briefing and PR gladhanding - with all the NSX's considerable rev range exploited and plenty of beyond the limit dancing about. Fabulous car. Fabulous track. And Senna at his most sub-zero.

Go on, it's worth another watch...

See here.

Dear Santa,

All I want for Christmas is a NSX.

I have been a good boy, honest.

This video reminds me of why i always buy a manual.

No matter how good an auto is, nothing beats that perfect heal & toe.

Always find it astonishing how long he is on the brakes for before the speedo needle moves off the stop. How much faster than the speedo markings must he have been going????

i just love the way he turns up in his "sports casual" get-up and proceeds to drive like a demon.

"The first look is one you'd wear to drive to Paris. It's called 'Cruiser Arriviste', canary yellow shirt, horizon blue stay-crease action slacks, cap, polaroids, tan string-back driving gloves. It's a look that says 'I'm in control of my vehicle'."

Japanese domestic market cars are (were?) limited to 180 or 190km/h, and their speedoes reflected that (190km/h is about 118mph).

I've seen this so many times over the years, incredible stuff, only marred by the fact that I start humming Billie Jean at about 42s in.

It had a 4-speed gearbox because it was the only way to fit Stefan Roser's balls in the car.

That's an over-used word these days.

In this case, it is fully justified. I'll admit to going a bit misty eyed at that. Real car, real driver - worthy of being called F1.
