Recommendations for 12k a year commute

Hello,
Brother is looking to replace his classic Mini with something a little more comfortable to do his 12k a year commute in!

He has a budget of around £3,000 and has said he'd prefer a diesel, although any economical petrols would be looked at too. Ideally needs to be big enough to get a few tools in now and again, he's a carpenter by trade and tools are kept at work but occasionally takes them home or to the odd job.

Not really too many requirements, comfort should drastically improve with anything compared to the mini, just that it's reliable and isn't going to cost an arm and leg to fix.

Has been looking at some of the focus diesels, so any opinions would be welcome.

I say look to the Volvos! An S60 or V70 would do nicely and a generally reliable and comfortable - plus the boot is vast.
