So I've been looking at a few cars which are advertised as category X - this is abit of a blurred category, I think it basically means it's had an insurance claim on it, but not been written off?

It apprently doesn't show on HPI, so if I were to buy one, then sell on, would I need to mention it at all?

I bought an 05 cat X range rover that was ex plod and very cheap, the damage was scratches all round and generally abused bodywork, your right it does not show on hpi, and so declaring it would be down to the seller. If the price is right, could be worth considering.

Most cat X cars seem to have had dealings with the Police - Police seizures etc

Often they are stolen, then the insurance company write them off after a period of time and payout to the claimant. Once the car is found they sell it off. smile
