Z4 - Just collected and driven home. First thoughts
Discussion
- * Photos finally added as promised ***
It's a 56' plate 3.0si and I'm very pleased indeed. Here are some initial thoughts, I'll do pictures with a loaf of bread over the weekend.
1 - Quick, but doesn't have the punch the the SLK280 had when I test drove it. Maybe I'm remembering the Merc to be faster than it was.
2 - Feels like you're driving fast when you aren't, the MX-5 gave me this feeling too. Not sure it's a bad thing, will help me keep my licence.
3 - Sports seats great, but someone chubbier than me would feel a bit squeezed I reckon
4 - 6th gear feels a little low. Not hugely so. I'm not used to seeing the gearstick in that position when in top gear so the feeling might be partly psychological.
5 - Looks stunning, and the best view is the engine bay. Car has only covered 26k and it's gleaming. What a piece of engineering.
6 - Stereo pretty good for the basic "business" model. Can't work out if there are big subs behind the seats, there are certainly grills for two pairs.
7 - A very solid and planted feel, and I was expecting a harder ride from the sport suspension. Pleasantly surprised.
8 - Happy that I bought the right car, Boxster would have cost too much to run, SLK was a bit 'meh', MX-5 I found noisy and low-rent, S2000 I didn't consider, TT I'm just not a fan of.
So, a happy bunny really, just need to work out how to set the clock as I don't (yet) have the owner's manual.
(Just to add, this is no longer the number plate).

Did you consider a Z4M mate as I guess your car, with such little miles would of cost you north of 10k, which is M money.
£9500, in superb condition. Was for sale at £10k and I did the deal over the phone. Only 1000 miles covered per year during the last five years. Bit low really but there you go.Bloke in the Porsche centre said they could have sold it to four other people last week. Might just be sales talk but he had no reason to lie. Must admit it is gorgeous and would have been £11k all day long from a BMW dealer rather than a Porsche dealer.

Why didnt they then?Back on topic though ive had my 3.0 for nearly 4 years and still no closer to wanting to change it. Apart from the usual hood motor failure and cracked rear springs it's been faultless. 95% of my driving is motorway and i regularly see 38mpg+ which is pretty impressive for the performance you get from it.

I loved my old one. Just a couple of things you should do, clutch delay valve mod and removing some foam from the sound generator. Plus if it's got runflats, ditch them. They make the car very skittish.
It has Bridgestone Potenza run flats on, but they're almost new. Can't make a case for ditching them when I'm perfectly happy with how the car drives.Sound gen is my first task, clutch delay valve I hadn't heard about. Will look into it further.

I'd suspect it might not feel as fast because the power delivery will be very linear.
Yes, I'd imagined that would probably be the case. I think the SLK gave a punch, because whilst the 280 is normally aspirated, the kickdown from the auto box really slammed in. (Dropped two cogs, maybe three). Must admit, I've test driven a few cars over the last couple of months, and that little experience in the 280 was VERY memorable. Car was dull though.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
