On the back of the braking thread I was wondering if they still teach this for the driving test?

I don't know about the mirror bit but I find it very frustrating the number of people who are driving along and then brake for what appears to be no apparent reason only to signal as they are going round a corner.

It doesn't change anything but it just seems to be needlessly bad etiquette. Why not signal first before hitting the brakes if you're going to do it anyway? Or maybe this is no longer on the test

The braking is part of the manoeuvre so signal before you do it!!!

It was certainly part of the test when I took mine in 2005. A lot of people's driving standards seem to fall once they pass their test though.
