I'm thinking about selling my 2008 Octavia vRS (k04 with 324bhp) after Christmas as with redundancy looming and a new job in prospect, I want to downgrade and get something a few years older and worth a bit less really.
My thought's at the minute are of either an 8L Audi S3 or possibly a B5 S4, I've had a few S3's before, so I know them quite well already and I'm a German car lover, although I wouldn't rule anything out really.
Has anybody any other suggestions which I may have overlooked?
Previously, among other's I've owned e36 M3, Volvo 850R which are in around the price I'm looking at spending really.....

Anything else to be considered. my limit, engine wise is around 3 litre, bearing in mind it must have rear seats for the occasional time's when I have the children with me, they mainly travel in the family car!

Definitely check out the Volvo 850.

Incredibly well made cars, comfortable, cheap parts, nippy and sound great.

I love mine. I bought it as a stop gap and still have it almost 3 years on.

Now on 189k miles and still on its original engine, gearbox, turbo and clutch.

Highly recommended.
I've had both an 850 T5 and an 850R, it was a 1998 registered, the last one ever registered I believe, which was an amazing car, I'd gladly have another, just trying to see if I've missed anything else out there!!

Some good suggestions, keep them coming,

The MPS is one that slipped my mind, I was supposed to buy one a few years back but it fell through in the end, they are really good value imo.

The Audi look's nice, but it will probably be February before I'm ready to make a purchase as I'm not even going to attempt to sell my car until well after silly season!

The w8 is nice, but the road tax in Ireland is an absolute killer, especially up to that engine size!

ST is another interesting one

Thanks all

I think so, but then I'm a tad biased smile

But really, the 9-5 Aero is unassuming, comfortable, you can get very well equipped ones for not much, and the turn of speed when you poke it is fun. Standing starts aren't great, but roll-on acceleration is really very good indeed thumbup

How about a Vauxhall Signum 2.8? - although the 250 bhp falls into the higher tax bracket, the 230 bhp one doesn't.

I'm considering an RX8, which is pretty leftfield. Not very economical but very good value and 4 useable seats.

My vote goes for a volvo but not an 850R - they're just too old now and most are utterly shagged - people seem to be hoarding the things - I've been after one for a while now and none tick all my boxes - My vote goes for a C70 T5 GT - absolute pittance to buy, nicer interior (10 speaker stereo!), more modern version of that legendary T5 engine and whilst no sports car, never forget, like the 850R the C70 was developed by TWR

Just wondering why the 3L limit? As you're thinking pre-2008, would you not go the full hog once you break through the top Irish tax bracket? eg AMG C55

I really like these. If they were cheaper to run then I'd have one as a daily. Only gonna be doing 10 miles each way though so it wouldn't even get up to temperature

It is a let down to be honest - if you're interested, my c70 t5 auto stacks up like this:

Real world figures
Drive like you stole it - approx 17mpg
Town - 25mpg
Undertaker style - 38mpg
Motorway - 33mpg
