Been noticing a few people I know, run of the mill cars but fairly hefty annual mileage of say 30/40k use part works. One fella is changing his tyres quite often using these part worns. It has to be false economy doesn't it even over some sort of budgets. They are only £20 a pop fitted but even budget nexens or something old have to be better value right?

I just think there are four bits of rubber keeping you on the road. Make them the best you can?

(Can I jut get this in first?) But the tyres on your car right now are part worns, and you've no idea if there isn't a nail in one of them at the moment, and nor are you going to make a thorough inspection before your next drive out.

I've got about 5mm left on them and I remove the stones and check for nails before a long drive.

My point was mainly that the "better" rubber may cost more BUT that may be the difference between staying on the black stuff and going to visit a ditch.

I've bought part worns before but I stick to decent branded ones. My local tyre fitters have good stock of branded part worns with plenty of tread (usually 6-7mm) with no repairs and they cost a damn sight less than a new one. Never had any issues, I don't see the point in buying part worn budgets though.

I know what's happened to the tyres that are on my car. I have no idea how part-worns may have been mistreated.

So every car you've ever bought has brand new tyres fitted?

I think 5th gear has done a test. The eco tyres have performed worse in braking test than the part-worns...

To the OP, if they make a lot of miles, it would be wiser to use eco tyres due to low resistance IMHO. Each to their own I believe...

When ever I buy a used car I'm never 100% happy with the tyres until I have replaced them. Thats not saying I replace them straight away but I probably replace them sooner than I would if I knew their history.

Ideally a car I buy has 4 premium, non ditch finder tyres fitted that are not too far away from needing replacement so I can haggle that into the deal and get the tyres I want once the car is mine.

I'm assuming the majority of part worn tyres with a good amount of tread on them come from cars that have been written off? I can't think where else you could get hold of large numbers of tyres with 4 to 5+ mm of tread remaining.

You can get some top notch tyres for peanuts.

Bought 4x Pirelli Scorpions BMW spec for my X3 with about 5mm tread for the £150 last year...I think just one costs around £150-200?

The last person who owned my BMW put some truly shocking tyres on them, will change ASAP. They have plenty of meat on them, but my word they are awful. Who spends loads of money on wheels (as he no doubt did) and then puts on awful tyres? I'm aiming to get some original 15" BMW alloys and decent tyres back on there ASAP. I would certainly prefer a good branded part worn to what is on there at the moment!

Exactly. Every time you buy a 2nd hand car you buy 4 part worn tyres, allied to part worn brakes, steering etc.

Doesn't mean I would choose to buy and fit those used brakes or tyres!

Often I end up changing tyres on 2nd hand cars because of damage, odd wear patterns from dodgy suspension etc.

Plus there is a question mark over where the tyres are from (a crashed car, spare wheel which has sat there for 5 years etc).

Your money but not for me. If I can't afford to maintain a car properly I won't buy it.

A lot of part worns come from Germany.

Drivers want winter tyres but don't want to buy a new set of wheels.

Tyres are changed, dealer keeps old tyres, car is sold/returned/crashed/stolen and summer tyres are never fitted again, dealer sells tyres on.

Check date stamp on tyres

They can make sense but you should replace tyres on 3mm.
If your doing 30-40 k and buying part worns your likely to be changing them 2-3 times a year tis a lot of hassle.

If your going to sell your car soon getting rid of your just legal a for part worns could be a smart move and let you rerun more of the asking price

I put a pair of part worn Michelins on my Mondeo yesterday. Its only a winter hack, the tyres cost me 50quid fitted and balanced. I have noticed a good increase i grip having previously had mismatched crap tyres on so I dont see the issue. Ive spent a little bit of money and improved my cars safety!

The problem I have is they all seem to be sold by dodgy back street outfits in Sheffield... If i could find somewhere reputable that looked like a professional place i'd happily buy them

Nature of the business really. They don't make the tyres, do they? If you want somewhere that 'looks professional', try your local main dealer. Make sure you have at least £600 on you.

I can't understand anyone buying part worn smoking hoops, however I would take a set of part worn ps2's over a set of new Nwxens anyday.
