Another 'what car' thread.. But you guys love them wink.

Im looking for something to replace my 106 rallye. After plummiting well into the 4 figures into her i decided she became too much for every day use. Track cars dont make good daily drives and i cant afford two cars, clunky lsd's, group A engine mounts, bucket seats.. All give you a bad back and annoy you day to day, no matter how good they look in progress threads.

For the winter i have an e36 to run into the ground but ill be looking for a replacement in the coming months.

I am after something which i could still do the odd track day here and there, but could still drive to the ring. Im aware that it will be a big compromise in one respect or the other and a budget of £5000 doesnt go very far!

I have looked at civic type r's (ep3) or the more raw dc2. Both appeal to me quite highly as theyre n/a but this isnt a must! And the ep3 with a lsd can be quite a capable car.

I have also looked at the other end of the spectrum and looked at a 330ci m sport, but comfier and more refined but may be too much of a compromise on the track or b road blast.

i handnt considered the trophy, assumed it would just be a slightly more modern version of the 106 and fancied a change.

The e36 m3 is a good shout, i did look into e36 328 sports but then quickly moved onto looking at the e46s as i do want something abit more modern.

My best mate was running an EP3 alongside my 106 Rallye. I thought it was a fantastic car. Much of the same 'rev the nuts off me' fun as the Rallye, but more grown up and spacious. Definitely nowhere near the same level of feedback, but a superb engine and a brilliant gearshift.

Not that I would ever change my Rallye for one though; my Rallye is near standard in terms of setup and is a perfect compromise for daily use, for the most part. It can be a little wearing in heavy traffic, but I rarely drive it in heavy traffic so I can't complain much. And it's a brilliant B road toy from the factory.

One thing that actually bothers me with the type r fleet, is that you become associated with the "vtec is the fastest thing ever and everything else is st" crowd..

The crowd i very much enjoyed quietening in my rallye on a b road.

But i do deffinatley have a soft spot for them, if i could stretch to a dc5 id have one in a heartbeat but the extra 3k is alot especially when its not twice the car!

I don't think you do, mainly because the only people who think that are 13 and don't actually own cars.

I spose you get abit of that with every fanboy though! Had a little look at r32 golfs this morning, whats the verdict on these? I remember reading the older ones were ok but the newer shape is the one to go for, budget allowing.

Every make has a dodgy scene. Scoobies, Evos, VWs, Honda, you name it. If you wish to avoid that you will have to focus on the oddball makes such as Alfa etc. Bu then you will be back to modding to get any pace.

I vote for keeping your obviously tricked out Rallye and making it more road friendly. Perhaps sound proofing, softer mounts etc.

tommy from the forums has one and likes it, but says it's nowhere near as exciting! Xenons, leather, auto box etc makes it a nice car for wafting home, but not the same on a B-road.

Civic is about what you're looking for tongue out
The Clios aren't too bad either, you get things like aircon and cruise control even!
A regular 172/182 will be more comfy than a Trophy probably.
Or a Mini Cooper S maybe? A3 3.2 Quattro? heavy but fast...

Or 306 GTI-6 to keep it in the family.
Or.. you know, another rallye but without the mods tongue out

Left field suggestion, no idea what they go for but the BRM Rover? Garish, not particularly fast but have LSD.

Oooh yea, Alfa 147 GTA? I haven't driven, probably not too *focused* but fairly nippy and not at all "scene".
eta: nvm, one on autotrader.. 7k frown
etaa: just looked at the 2L 147. Lots for cheap. How fast are they? I winced when I read the 0-60. How did they manage that with a 2L hatch?

If you don't fancy a 182/Trophy then THIS. £4-5k will get you a top one. The engine is brilliant, the handling is adjustable and it's low maintenance.

I wouldn’t consider Mk4 R32; yes it looks cool and sounds great but I suspect it’d be a bit too soft as an occasional track car. I loved my Corrado VR6 and tracked it twice but it’s more of a GT than sports car.

Do drive a Trophy before you buy the next car.

IMHO, and having run one, the hype is valid.

Easy, just buy a 306 Rallye! Don't go Renault after a Rallye - it will never feel as special. I'd go so far to say that a 206 GTi will feel better.

Otherwise, go for an Integra if you can find one without rust.

Clio 182 full-fat with both cup packs.

I've had mine for 6 weeks and I love it. Great handling, nippy - but has aircon, heated bits, xenons, cruise control etc.

Or a Celica T190 for a slightly quieter daily dose of fun for less money.
