I was on the M25 yesterday and noticed a car with the fuel flap open....thought nothing of it until we got closed and realised the Cap was unscrewed and hanging off too! Couldn't quite believe it

I was amazed that someone could go to the effort of going to a petrol station, open the fuel flap, unscrew the cap, fill the car but forget to do the reverse!

So, enlighten me, what impact/danger does driving with the fuel cap unscrewed have on a car?

Not a lot. Might scratch your paint swinging around maybe?

Unless it was raining and water could get in, non I would have thought! Over a long period dirt could have got in.
Some cars don't come with proper caps now anyway, just a seal that the fuel flap shuts against

Just the minor issue of potentially slinging diesel (if diesel) all over the road, causing a major hazard for anyone on two wheels and some on four.

Most cars now have a little flap in the neck to prevent this.

I managed to drive off without putting the filler cap on my MGB once. Rather annoyingly, it was on the way to the MoT centre and of course on an old car like that the cap wasn't attached so it failed the MoT on not having a fuel filler carp. banghead

I did this once with my dad's car. When I got home and realised, the filler cap was missing.

Went back to the petrol station to see if they had it and they pulled out a tray of about 20 filler caps!
