Can anyone do me a valuation?
Discussion
Hello
My car was smacked by someone else and I've just had her insurers on the phone, offering me £1700 for the car. I consider this way too low (I paid nearly double that a year ago, and other similar cars appear to be anyhere from £3-10k!!) - but I was wondering if someone could help me out with the book value, so I know what I'm up against (I can provide examples of cars for sale, but if I can quote glasses then that'd help). The car's too old\specialized for most valuation sites I can find.
The car in question is a 1989 porsche 944 s2, with 107,000 miles. I'd describe the condition as fair - a little rust but overall average for the year. the plate is G780PUA
The car previously had a cat C (back in 1998) - so it'd be good to know how that affects things as well (I know it'll lower the valuation, but not by how much)
Thanks in advance
Hugh

Gut feeling, that spread in values sounds about right. As to the value of your particular car probably much better posting on the Porsche forum but a good starting point would be what you paid last year. The car in question is a 1989 porsche 944 s2, with 107,000 miles. I'd describe the condition as fair - a little rust but overall average for the year. the plate is G780PUA
thanks for your help - Especially Ferris. It's good to know that they're not working with more information than I am.
They're refusing to budge at the moment, and claiming they've done 'market research' (I'm not sure they have done it on the correct car - maybe just the base 944 which is worth ~ 40% less).
According to the ombudsman - http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications...
I should be looking at retail for a similar car, minus a maximum of 20% for being previous cat C. Looking at working cars on ebay (ie not spares/repairs) through completed listings (which is a good method I hadn't thought of - thank you) I can only see 7 coupes, prices range from 2200 to 4500 but all the cars prieced under £4k have significant milage (142k up to 220k compared to mine which has 107k) - I know milage isn't the be-all and end-all but it's difficult with such a small sample set to gauge what the 'correct' price is.
The only car which sold for £1700 is cat C right now - ie still damaged (fairly significantly), no tax, no mot, no v5 and higher milage - I don't think that obtaining that much for a car which was in good condition prior to the accident can be considered fair?
In the mean time I've listed every running car for sale today into a spreadsheet and sent it off to them - 17 cars, average price £6k. I'm not expecting anything like that much, I'd be happy with £3k plus keeping the car. I also managed to find hagarty who have an online car valuing tool, who value it at 5k if its in 'good' condition, and the practical classics book which reckons the same.
