OK it does help when it's really cold, but anyone notice how salt just retains moisture and makes the road worse when it is in the 4-10 degree range? Are we a bit keen to dump salt everywhere? Just appears to spread the misery about a bit thinner rather than deal with it.

Definitely. It's like a dirty, black, greasy paste that in many places is way more slippery than when it's merely wet.

However, I think I'd rather it be slippery everywhere and I know about it than grippy everywhere except the random icy bit, mid-corner on the left hander of a fast A-road.

The paste is why I'm a FWB.

Yes agree and it's over used but what's the alternative to the filthy polluting muck ?
Winter tyres and more driver training? Me I'd be happy to drive acording to the conditions
However most folk don't have a clue how to judge road conditions so you have to salt the roads
to cover for morons .

Sodium ferrocyanide ( E535 ) and ABP ( like molasses ) are added to the salt which stops it caking and sticks it to the road better. When it dries out it can make it slippier than a plain dry road though
